Before I was victim to another round of rejection though, I caught myself.
I slid my fingertips down Sutton’s smooth throat. I longed to do more but I knew better. “You ready to go for breakfast? I’m sure you have a full day of practice,” I said, masking the pain blooming in my chest.
“I do. I’m going to get in ten hours today. Do you have any showings today?” She asked.
“Yeah, several on the harbor so I won’t be far.” I kissed her knuckles and headed into the bedroom. She was right behind me.
My relationship with Sutton wasn’t an easy one and often times my friends and family questioned why I stayed. They didn’t see the spark I saw in her though. They didn’t see the way she looked at me.
Sutton read me like a sheet of music. We clicked on every level. The only thing lacking between us was sex. She knew it. I knew it. I just always held out hope that one day we’d get counseling. One day she’d have a breakthrough and whatever wall she had up would come tumbling down.
“You should wear the blue suit today,” she told me, holding out a freshly pressed and tailored suit from the closet.
“I had the gray one picked out. You don’t like it?” I raised an eyebrow and she smiled a little tipping her head this way and that.
“I like the blue better. That’s the color I saw when I watched you play a few minutes ago. It was like an aura around you.”
“Blue it is, then.”
We got dressed and headed to Tuesday’s Café for a bite to eat. When we arrived, I held open the door for Sutton and watched her hips sway in front of me as she walked in. Even if I couldn’t always have it, I loved staring at her ass.
Once we were seated in a cozy booth, Sutton flipped through the menu even though we both knew she’d get what she always got. Scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon and fresh fruit. She rarely deviated.
“It’s always a pleasure to see you, Mr. English. You’re such a breath of fresh air.” The server that seated us was a woman we’d had many times in the past and every time, she insisted on smiling in my face and making small talk with me but not Sutton.
It was a pattern I noticed everywhere. I swear temptation lurked around every fucking corner. I had blinders on though.
“Thank you, Samantha. Sutton and I love coming to this little café. You guys have the best food.”
“You really do,” Sutton smiled without looking up from the menu. Samantha’s smile slipped a bit then she nodded her head.
“I’m so glad you both enjoy coming here.” She looked at me and I pretended not to see the desire in her eyes. I was really good at pretending but sometimes I wondered what would happen if I did cheat on my wife. It probably wouldn’t be worth it but the primal side of me couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Once the waitress disappeared, Sutton looked at me over the top of her menu and frowned. “How blatant can she be? We know she’s attracted to you. Jesus.”
“None of that matters though. I’m here with my wife. You have every woman in here beat.” I rubbed her hand from across the table and stared at her wedding band. I may have been sexually frustrated but I never regretted marrying her.
“You’re required to say that by law, Lennox,” she laughed and her eyes sparkled.
“Maybe…” I shrugged playfully and she shoved me.
We talked about our upcoming day while she sipped a plain latte and I drank a black dark roast. When our food came out, she poked fun at the way I buttered my biscuit with honey on one side and butter on the other. It was a normal morning for us.
My mind kept flitting to the fantasy of adding children to our dynamic though. I wanted to tell Sutton about the vision that I woke up with but something restricted my words. I couldn’t get them to come out.
I’d wait to bring up kids.
Whenever I thought about talking kids with Sutton, I always opted to wait. Today was no different.
After breakfast, I kissed her forehead and told her to have a good day before we went our separate ways. Even after we left each other, I saw perfect little chubby cheeks and shining brown eyes in my mind. The urge to have a family was starting to sink deeper into my mind and soon, we’d have to have a conversation I didn’t know that I wanted to have.
