“Hey, are you mad at me?” Her sweet scent swirled around me and forced my eyes to hers.
Fuck. They were so beautiful.
I drew in a long breath and shut my eyes for a moment.
“Sutton, I know what to expect from you but that doesn’t make the pill any less jagged. Get some rest, okay?” I rubbed the back of her hand but she didn’t lie down like she normally does.
Instead, she rubbed my shoulder and danced her fingers up my neck. Now I was the one who wasn’t in the mood. I took her exploratory hand in mine and kissed her knuckles. “Get some sleep, Sutton. We’ll have breakfast at Tuesday’s Café in the morning after you practice.”
“Will you play with me?” She asked, her eyes shone and as usual, they hit me square in the fucking chest. I could feel my limbs being wrapped around her pinky finger the longer she stared at me.
“I’ll play with you,” I promised her.
“Thank you.” Her full lips curved into a genuine smile right before she slid down into bed and pulled the blankets over her shoulders.
As much as I wanted to punish her for withdrawing from me after I put in so much effort to make her feel loved, I couldn’t.Sutton was my weak spot. I’d move mountains for that woman even if it meant I’d turn to dust in the process.[DJ1]
…
When my eyes opened, golden slices of sunlight stretched across the cherry wood floors and reached up the walls. Sutton’s fingers painted notes in the air while I lay there for a moment, listening. She was working on another Ravel piece. It didn’t shock me since he was her utmost favorite composer.
The silky chords ofJeux d’eaumade me sit up and visualize each note in my mind. With my eyes closed, I saw a picture painted in front of me. One where our future kids shared quiet giggles while they ate pancakes with way too much maple syrup at the breakfast table all the while listening to Sutton play furiously and beautifully on the piano.
God, that woman’s fingers on those keys sent chills through my body. I padded into the living room and stood to watch her play. Her back was to me. She stroked the keys while her head swayed. To the naked eye, she was still as a statue but I knew her. She couldn’t help but move to the music as it trickled from her fingers.
Long chestnut waves swept her lower back. It was the only giveaway to the fact that she was moving at all. It moved with her. It had to follow the melody too.
Once I had my fill of watching her, I moved to the space beside the piano and plucked my violin from its stand, placing my chin on the rest. Sutton didn’t look up at me but she smiled when I came into her view. Her focus was on the keys and mine was on the strings.
Together we playedJeaux d’eaupassionately. It gave me goosebumps with each vibration of the strings as I slid my bow back and forth.
“That last note was sour, Lennox. Come on now,” Sutton teased without missing a beat.
“Everyone doesn’t have four hands like you, Sutton.”
“You don’t need four hands. Just a few more fingers,” she grinned. We melted back into the music and I shut my eyes, drawing my brows together as I tried to compliment her skill. She was truly unmatched though.
When her notes trailed off into silence, I opened my eyes and looked at her. She was staring at me like I hung the moon. I loved that look.
It was bittersweet though.
She’d look at me with so much love but it was nearly impossible getting her to translate it in other ways. “Why’d you stop?” I asked, nearly breathless from playing to her standards. My heart was racing and my hands were buzzing with energy.
“You look so perfect when you’re playing and you get lost in it, Lennox. I just…I’m at a loss sometimes. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” She stood from the bench and walked over to me. I set the violin down and rested my hands on her hips. Warm vanilla invaded my senses as I leaned down to kiss her lips.
“It can’t be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. All these mirrors we have in the house and you’ve never looked at yourself?” I winked at her after pulling back a bit and her honey brown skin glowed a little from my compliment.
I stared at her beautiful face and mapped out everywhere I wanted to kiss her.
Eyelids.
Nose.
Cheeks.
Lips.
Neck.
