Page 118 of Margot
“Margot, why are you talking like you’re leaving?” His Adam’s apple bobbed in his throat and he sat up completely.
“Because I have to go now, Lennox. I don’t know if that’s a thing but I can feel myself slipping further away every day. Sutton is so strong now. She doesn’t need me.”
“Margot, what…what’s going to happen to you? I mean…” He swallowed again and I saw the confusion and sadness in his copper eyes.
God, those eyes…
“I don’t know. I just know it’s time to go. I never knew what the fuck my purpose was but when I met you and found out about Sutton, I knew it was to evolve. Seeing Cordelia today solidified that.
You have no idea how much you’ve helped me. I have no way to repay you so do me a favor, Lennox.”
“Anything.” He curled his fingers behind my neck and pulled me so close that our noses touched. Oh my god, my heart. It crashed against my breastbone like a wild animal fighting to get free.
“Just keep loving Sutton as fiercely as you always have. Keep being the beautiful human that you are because there’s not enough of that in the world. People like you—good people—they change the dark to light. That’s what you did for me.” Even though I was letting the tears roll freely, I smiled at him.
He nodded his head and shut his eyes, pulling my face closer until our foreheads touched. “Margot, you’ve changed my life. Forever. Thank you.”
“Please tell Sutton I love her more than she could ever know. I’m so proud of her. I’m proud of us. We did it. We faced down our demons and we fucking won.”
“I’ll tell her,” he said. Silence fell between us and all around us. He kissed me so softly that my breath stuttered when I inhaled.
Neither of us spoke again. He just held me against him while I drifted off to sleep. It was sleep I knew I wouldn’t wake up from but I was okay with that.
I served my purpose.
