I studied the fine swirls of hair lying against her hairline and the way her thick eyelashes seemed to rest against her cheek while she stared down at her phone. She was gorgeous. I knew better but I couldn’t help tipping her chin up so that I could look into her eyes.

I brushed my lips against hers and she pulled back a little. It was enough to crush me. Why the fuck did I even try anything spontaneous while she was deep in concentration?

“I’m sorry, Lennox. I’m just trying to make this schedule work and factor in breaks.” Her eyes were apologetic but the damage had been done.

I knew after that the next two weeks would be lonely as hell. Sutton would bury herself in work and I would be left alone without even the intimacy of conversation or the way she looked at me when I walked into the room.

Even if we didn’t have sex, I always saw the love coming from her. I could always tell when her body reacted to me.

Now?

Now, I’d be lucky to hear her say hello to me.

The rest of the night, instead of us talking over dinner, Sutton practiced Ravel over and over. I knew each piece by heart. I knew each note that would follow the one before it and it still irritated me to no end.

I showered, brushed my teeth and grabbed something a little stronger than chardonnay to take the edge off.

“Goodnight,” I muttered walking past her turned back as I went into the bedroom. Her silence was all I needed to confirm that I wouldn’t have my wife for the next two weeks.

At least she was happy though.
