Loki was rather quiet, but I knew part of it was exhaustion. He’d had only three hours of sleep in the past two days. In the early hours of this morning, he returned to the house, showered, and crawled into bed with me. I snuggled up with him and fell into a deep sleep until the phone rang.
The ringing of his phone jerked us awake sooner than we wanted. Loki fumbled on the nightstand until he found it. I was dozing when he answered it, but I sat up when I heard him say, “We’ll be there.”
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“I hate to do this, but that was Tank. It seems that Jessica and the baby feel like we haven’t had enough excitement. They’re on their way to the hospital. Jess is in labor.”
I dove out of bed and we hurried to get dressed.
Loki chuckled as he watched me running around.
He went to wake Xander while I finished getting ready.
Since Jessica and Ajax had Kiara, their five-and-a-half-year-old, to take care of, when we met in the clubhouse, which was where the club gathered, it was decided that Jayla would watch her first. Later, someone would switch out and let Jayla go to the hospital.
I volunteered to be one of the relief sitters.
It was a long day, but I loved seeing how the club supported Ajax and Jess and cared for Kiara. I held back telling Loki our baby news. It didn’t seem right to do it then. It would be like stealing the spotlight from them.
It was early evening when Ajax entered the labor and delivery waiting room. He smiled wildly as he announced loudly, “My daughter is here! And she’s gorgeous.”
He ran back out. It wasn’t until later, after people were able to see Mom and baby, that we were told her name was Kenyah.
And he was right. Kenyah was beautiful. After the baby was born, Kiara was brought to the hospital to see her baby sister.
She was fascinated and wanted to hold her the entire time.
That had been hours ago. We’d brought home dinner for Xander and ourselves. He’d hung out at the compound with whoever was at the clubhouse. It was now eleven thirty at night. We were in bed. Xander was asleep. I knew we should be, but I wanted to tell Loki the news before he had to leave again.
With the arrival of Kenyah, the guys had been delayed in their efforts to find and go after the man tasked with killing me.
Loki hadn’t shared a whole lot of details about what they did to their captives, and I didn’t ask.
But he did tell me the hitman’s name and how he could be found.
Outlaw was in the middle of trying to track where the guy was so that they could go after him.
I prayed they’d find the hitman and eliminate him, and no one would get hurt or arrested.
With that looming ahead, I wasn’t sure when we’d have time to talk.
Making my decision, I sat up with my back to the headboard. Loki perked up and gave me a concerned look.
“Are you alright?” he asked as he sat up.
“I’m fine. I just wanted to tell you something while we have a few minutes alone, before you have to run off again. Something happened when you were at your meeting with the Brutal Rebels.”
“Okay, what?” he asked slowly.
“Remember when you came in and saw me teary-eyed, and I told you it was something happy that Xander said?”
Loki nodded, so I kept going. “Well, it was a happy comment. I told him I hoped he’d see me as more than your girlfriend one day. He assured me he did and that I was more of a mom to him than Roxie. Then he called me Mom.”
“Baby, that’s great,” Loki said, hugging me closer. Before he could kiss me, I pressed on his chest. He frowned.
“There’s more. The whole reason we got on the topic at all was because he overheard something the women were saying. I was worried when he did that, he’d be upset or worried.”
“Brae, you’re killing me. Tell me,” he ordered.
“It seems that you and your son were right. The reason I’ve been sick and losing weight isn’t stress.
Zara told me who I had to see immediately for more testing, and the old ladies heard her and asked why.
It went from there. I didn’t want you to be the last to know.
I’m sorry, Alexander. Zara confirmed that I’m pregnant. ”
Loki’s concerned look changed to a surprised one, then to an overjoyed one. I was hauled on top of him, and he kissed me. I eagerly nipped, licked, and sucked on his lips in between us, pressing them together. Just like that, I was hot and ready to have sex. It had been a couple of days.
I was about to suggest we get rid of our clothes when his phone began to blare a weird sound. It was unlike any alarm I’d ever heard. As soon as he heard it, Loki stopped kissing me and rolled off the bed with me in his arms. He got to his feet with me clutched against his chest.
“Alexander, what’s wrong?”
“That’s Outlaw’s special alert. The compound is under attack. Get into our closet. Let me go grab Xander,” he rattled off as he ran into the bathroom and put me on my feet.
“Stay,” he ordered before he raced out, shutting the door behind him. I paced as I waited. I wondered what was happening and whether someone had actually attacked or if it was a false alarm. Loki was back with a scared, sleepy Xander within a few minutes.
Xander and I stood in the doorway of the closet, watching his dad. As Loki dressed and armed himself, he gave us instructions.
“You stay in the closet. It has no window. The door is thick. Lock it and don’t open it for anyone but a club member.
Stay down and away from the window if you have to use the bathroom.
The window is too small for anyone to crawl in it.
There is a handgun in that drawer, babe.
You know how to use one. If someone tries to get in, you make sure to use it.
Xander, I need you to stay with your mom and do exactly what she says.
I have to see what’s happening. I can’t have my attention divided. I’m relying on you to do as I ask.”
“Dad, I will. I promise.”
“Honey, we won’t leave. Just be careful,” I pleaded.
Loki came to us, pressed a kiss to his son’s cheek and then one to my mouth, and then he was gone, whispering, “I love you.”
“I love you,” I yelled after him.
Xander was crying. I shut and locked the door and then took him further back in the huge closet. As I passed the built-in drawers, I took out the gun, which went with us. We sat in the closet, straining our ears to hear what was happening. As we held each other, I prayed.
There was no clock in there, so I had no idea how much time had passed.
It felt like hours to us, but in actuality, it was probably thirty minutes.
I swore a time or two I heard gunfire, but I couldn’t be sure.
Another time, Xander thought he heard voices yelling.
I was pissed that I didn’t have my phone with me.
I thought about slipping out to get it, but when I shifted, Xander clung to me tighter.
“No, Dad said to stay here. I’m not letting you go. If you or the baby gets hurt, I don’t know what I’ll do. Did you tell him you’re pregnant?”
“I did. In fact, I’d just told him, and he kissed me when that weird alarm on his phone went off, and he started running around. When this is over, we need him to tell us about it. I should have it on my phone.”
As Xander and I sat there talking about the phone and alarms, it diverted our attention from what was happening. We were so into our conversation that when the loud knock came from the closet door, we both yelped in surprise.
“Spellbinder, Xander, it’s me. It’s safe to come out,” Loki called out.
On shaky legs, I rose with help from Xander. I paused to slip the gun back in as we passed the drawer. Xander unlocked the door. Loki shoved it open and then swept us both into his arms. He hugged us.
“What was it? A false alarm?” I asked.
He hesitated, then, after a swift glance at his son, said, “Something like that. Sorry about that. It’s clear. We can go back to bed.”
“Tomorrow, Xander and I want you to explain the alarm and how I can get it on my phone.”
“Sure thing. It hasn’t been used in a long time, so I forgot about it.
Xander, do you need anything before you go to bed?
If you want to sit and talk for a bit, we can.
I know it scared you when I came busting into your room like that.
I didn’t mean to. I wanted you and Brae in the safest spot in the house as fast as possible. ”
“We have a security system in the house, but usually don’t lock the doors or set the alarm. Is there a way to have that alarm thingy on your phone go off and sound in the house?” Xander asked.
“I can ask Outlaw. He can probably figure it out easily. Good idea,” Loki responded.
We talked in Xander’s room while lounging on his bed for twenty minutes.
The conversation went from the alarm to the baby.
They talked about painting the baby’s room.
They had me laughing. I called it a night when I saw Xander stifling a second yawn.
I kissed and hugged him, and we went to our room.
As Loki shut off the overhead light, I got into bed.
When he slid in beside me, I hit him with it.
“We’re alone. Tell me what happened out there, Alexander. And don’t hide anything,” I demanded.
He sighed before he said a word. “Thank you for not calling me on it with Xander there. I knew you weren’t satisfied with my answer. I hate scaring either of you. It wasn’t a false alarm. We’ll have your phone put on the system tomorrow.
“The thing is, Outlaw can monitor the outer walls, and if movement is detected, he’ll be alerted.
If motion detectors on the walls detect actual pressure on it above a certain amount or the cameras pick up movement on the walls, they can alert differently.
That was the sound you heard. It’s an advanced way for us to know that someone has likely tried to climb the walls to gain entry. Both happened.
