The pitiful groan that Wrath let loose had everyone snickering or laughing, sometimes both.
Once everyone quieted, it didn’t take long before they had the other bed pushed up against mine, the wheels locked so it wouldn’t move, and a pale Loki was lying next to me.
We snuggled up next to each other. We were about to tell them what happened when the door opened, and in came an older woman in a nurse’s uniform.
The scowl on her face told me this had to be Battleax. When she saw Jalisa, she smiled.
“Daughter, did you tell them the rules? They know any hanky-panky, and they’ll be separated no matter what you do or say?”
“Yes, Momma, I told them. Here, let me officially introduce you to your son-in-law. This hunk is my man, Wrath. Honey, this is Momma Jean.”
As Momma Jean and Wrath eyed each other, the rest of us watched. He did hold out his hand. When she shook it, you could tell she was trying to squeeze his hand to pieces. When she let go, Wrath shook his head.
“What did I do to deserve this, Lunatic?” Wrath pleaded to Jalisa.
“You fell in love with me, babe. But you know it’s worth it. When we get to the hotel later, I’ll show you why.” She winked. The way he grinned, I guessed Wrath thought it would be.
“Alright, now that I’ve had to throw up in my mouth, I need you to clear out and let these two get their rest. It’s time for me to hook up the IV you took out,” Momma Jean said, glaring at Loki. “Then it’ll be time for more pain meds if you need them,” she directed at both of us.
“Yes, to the meds. As for them leaving, they can’t until we finish telling them what happened. Give us fifteen minutes,” Loki demanded.
“And who died and left you the head of the hospital? Oh, I know, nobody,” she snipped back.
“Momma Jean, it’s essential for the club to know what happened. Can we please have those fifteen? I promise I’ll get them out. Well, probably not Betty. She’s her mom, so you can understand why she wants to stay. And Rage is her man. He won’t let Betty remain without him,” Jalisa sweetly explained.
There was a slight softening to Momma Jean’s face before she sighed. “Girly, I don’t know how you do it. Okay, fifteen minutes, but not a minute more. Don’t make me regret it.”
“We won’t,” Jalisa promised.
That said, Momma Jean left the room, and we were alone to talk.
“Tell us,” Wrath ordered with a frown.
Loki started the story and told them we both sensed danger but couldn’t find it.
I popped in and out to add to the details until we reached the end of my memories.
It seemed I passed out, and Loki had remained awake.
The fear he expressed when I did and he thought I was dead was palpable in the room.
He was holding my hand. He squeezed it harder. When we were done, there was silence.
I tried not to yawn or move. When I moved, the pain would radiate throughout my entire body. I could move everything, it seemed, so did that mean my injuries were simply bruises and cuts? If so, I was fortunate.
“Loki, what happened to your arm?” I asked softly.
“It’s nothing to worry about. It’s a cut, but it’ll heal,” he assured me.
“He’s got a dozen stitches in it. It seems Mr. Man cut it trying to reach you.
He took off his seatbelt and tried to shield you.
He left that out. The paramedics and firemen remarked that he wasn’t wearing his.
When they asked why not, he told them what he did.
He was wild, and they had to take care of you before he allowed them to touch him,” Rage explained.
My heart beat faster. “Why would you do that? You could’ve been killed,” I scolded him.
“Because I’ll always protect you any way I can. It’s my duty as your old man. Without you, I’d be half a person,” he boldly stated, loud enough for the others to hear him.
I couldn’t stop myself. I drew his head down so I could kiss him. I heard the mock grumbles in the background as I did. I gave them the only response they deserved. I held up my middle finger. Laughter came spilling out of them. I took my time before I released him.
“Thank you, but I can’t be without you. Remember that,” I told him.
“I can’t believe this. She brought a Warrior into the family without our approval. Maybe we can kill him and hide the body,” Ryder, the club’s enforcer, muttered.
“Try it and see what you get,” Loki told him, smirking.
“Alright, enough fooling around. We have a big problem here. Thank God neither of you has major injuries. Bruises, contusions, and cuts are the extent of it. As far as the doctors can tell, there are no internal injuries. The paramedics and firemen said it was a miracle. When you see the car, you’ll know why,” Wrath said.
“What about the person who hit us? Where is he or she?” Loki asked with a growl.
“No one knows. As soon as he hit you, he jumped out of the van and ran to a nearby car waiting in traffic. He got in, and it sped off. Witnesses didn’t see inside due to the dark windows, and the car had no license plate.
I’m trying to locate it on CCTV, but it’ll take a while, and there’s no promise it’ll tell us anything.
Other than knowing it was deliberate, that’s all we have,” Crusher stated.
“Son of a bitch,” Loki muttered. I wanted to say the same.
“It had to be Cedric,” Storm stated.
“I don’t know if it was. Sure, he’s a suspect, but we need to add Braelyn’s boss and his bodyguard to the list,” Loki muttered darkly.
“Surely, Eli wouldn’t be that vindictive and stupid,” I protested.
Loki stared at me. “He wants you. You decisively told him it’s never happening. You humiliated him at the office yesterday. You have him by the balls. I wouldn’t discount it. People sometimes go after those they’re obsessed with, and if they can’t have them, no one can,” Loki reminded me.
“What the fuck happened with her boss?” Rage asked.
Again, Loki and I were the center of attention when we told them about the meeting I had with Eli. When we were done, the room was full of scowls.
“I have Outlaw working on finding anything he can on Eli and Hendrix. Crusher, if you follow up on the car, that would be great. Thanks for doing it. Until we know where the danger is coming from, Braelyn needs more guards,” Loki insisted.
“It’s not just her. You were in the car. What if it was a calculated move to eliminate you? The van hit more on your side than hers,” Jalisa piped up.
Before a debate could break out, the door opened, and Momma Jean swept in. She had her don’t mess with me look.
“It’s time to leave them to rest. I have their pain meds and that one’s IV. Shoo. Mom and Dad can stay. If you take turns, two at a time can be with them, but don’t tire them out,” Momma Jean warned as she got busy attaching the IV line to the port in Loki’s arm. Mine was still infusing slowly.
There were lighthearted grumbles, but everyone did as she ordered. Before she left, Jalisa went up and whispered in Momma Jean’s ear, making the nurse smile before Jalisa walked out with Wrath. I knew we’d see Wrath again soon.
It didn’t take Momma Jean long to have us situated and the pain meds administered through the IV, which had it hitting us right away. I grew sleepy, and the pain seeped away. I closed my eyes to rest for a moment. All I needed was a minute.
