Chaos answered by shifting his head and giving me a kiss next to my mouth.
To the others from where they were standing, it would appear as if he kissed my mouth.
He held me so I couldn’t move away. He didn’t move until we heard what sounded like a hiss of disapproval.
Chaos smiled and moved away when he heard it.
“See you later, sweetness. Loki, don’t keep her too long.”
“I’ll take enough time to persuade her to let us protect her. I promise, with me here, you have nothing to worry about. I’ll defend her with my life,” Loki promised.
“I’m sure you will,” Chaos muttered before he opened the door and ushered the other three out. The closing of the door sounded extra loud. Instantly, I was twisted in knots. My stomach churned, and I felt as if I could throw up.
“Braelyn, come sit with me. I have a lot to tell you.”
I slowly took the hand he presented to me.
A jolt of hyperawareness sparked within me.
I felt it to my core and straight to both breasts.
God, not this. I needed to focus and get him out of here as fast as possible.
Being in close contact with Loki for an extended period was no good.
It tested my ability to keep my feelings to myself.
I didn’t want to mortify myself by confessing how he affected me when he barely tolerated me.
I was shocked he came to talk to me, to be honest. Why him?
Loki walked us to the couch. He gently pressed on me until I sat.
Then he took the empty spot next to me. I fought not to inhale too deeply.
His scent was increasing my desire. Never had the simple smell of a man done that.
I needed to get laid. That was the solution.
It had been too long since I’d had sex. His words snared my scattered thoughts.
“Braelyn, why won’t you tell your family who this guy is? I know it’s not because you want to frighten or make them worry. That’s not the kind of person you are. So why are you refusing?”
“Loki, I don’t want them to worry. This is probably harmless boasting on his part.
He wants to stir things up and make me focus on the threat rather than working to ensure he stays in prison where he belongs.
Does he have the capability to harm me? Yes.
But he’d have to be stupid to do it. If I were hurt or killed, the DA would know who to look at.
And if the Pagans know who he is, they won’t let it go, even if he doesn’t have me hurt. ”
I knew immediately I’d said too much. The way Loki’s whole body straightened told me he caught my slip. Damn it! I should’ve kept my mouth shut. I tried to divert him.
“I appreciate that you came all this way to try and offer help, but it’s unnecessary.
If there were a credible threat, the police would have me in protective custody.
As you can see, they don’t. I’ve got good locks on my door.
I’m armed, and I have a license to carry a firearm.
I’ll start doing it. I won’t open the door to anyone I don’t know.
And I’ll remain alert and watch my ass when I’m out.
I’m not without self-defense training and skills, Loki.
I can care for myself in the unlikely event he does send someone after me. ”
“If it’s such an improbable thing, why be more alert and carry?
Or tell me that you know how to protect yourself?
That sounds like you think it’s possible, but you don’t want the club to get involved.
Why? You said they wouldn’t let it go, even if he didn’t come after you, if they knew who it was. Who is this man?”
“My work is confidential even after the person goes to prison. I can’t talk about it,” I babbled.
“Bullshit! Try to tell me something I believe,” he replied.
I decided to go on the attack. If I made him uncomfortable enough, he’d leave.
“Why are you here, Loki?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, if Wrath wanted a Warrior to talk me into telling them who and to accept protection, why would you be the one sent? You are the last person who would care.”
“That’s not true, Braelyn,” he answered gruffly.
“Like hell, it’s not. You don’t even like me. You’ve barely spoken to me any time we’ve met. You go out of your way to avoid contact after a brief hello. Why would Bull send someone like you? I think he has several others who would do it. They at least act as if they like me.”
Making him uncomfortable and putting him in the hot seat would drive him away. He did get a pained look on his face. I waited for him to excuse himself.
“Braelyn, I don’t dislike you. The way I’ve acted doesn’t mean what you think. We can talk about that later. What we need to do now is discuss who this man is and why you’re protecting him.”
“I’m not protecting that monster! I would never. I’m protecting my friends and family!” I yelled as I came to my feet. Swiftly, I paced away from him.
“So he’s a danger to the Pagans. Why? I think they can protect themselves.”
“He’s a danger to everyone, especially the Pagans or anyone like them. Stay out of this, Loki. Go home. I’m not getting you, the Pagans, or any of their friends’ clubs hurt or killed. Drop it,” I ordered.
He stood and walked over to me. I stood my ground. Loki stared intently into my eyes for several moments before he answered me.
“You’re scared. You’ve given me no choice, Braelyn.”
When he paused, I asked, “What does that mean?”
“It means until this is over, I’ll be your shadow. I’ll have Outlaw get with Crusher to dig into your cases from last year. We’ll figure it out. And once we know who, we’ll formulate a plan to eliminate the threat.”
I grabbed his arm. It felt like a rock under my hand.
I shook it. “No! You can’t do that. Please, don’t get the hackers involved.
You don’t know what this will do. I can’t have you, the Pagans, or other bikers visibly seen with me.
” I was rattled and babbled whatever came to mind. I had to stop him.
Loki raised his hands and grasped my upper arms. It wasn’t a painful grip. He drew me closer. I received the gentlest shake. “Then tell us so we can protect ourselves and you.”
I shook my head as tears clouded my vision. “No,” I moaned.
The next thing I knew, I was yanked into his arms. Loki had me cocooned in his scent and warmth. His breath whispered over my ear. “Tell me, Brae-Brae. Let me keep you safe. You can help keep the rest of us that way.”
My resolve crumbled at his feet.
