He made his way out of Grayson’s house, lucky for him he was familiar with the large house, and found his way out through the kitchen as opposed to the sunroom or the double doors in one of the back living rooms.

When the slightly chilly night air hit his face, he was finally able to breathe. Linc knew part of his ire was the fact that he’d lied to his papa. He may be a grown man, and he might have been away from home for over fifteen years but lying to his beloved parent still left a sour taste in his mouth.

But Linc also knew that he wasn’t willing to backtrack. For the simple fact that his papa’s spirits had been lifted. Linc had been worried about his father for a while now. He’d never realized just how dependent papa was on his alpha father till his death.

He realized his parents had barely spent nights apart, and it had broken Lincoln’s heart to see his papa look so lost. His usually vibrant papa had become withdrawn and depressed, his beautiful blond hair that had always been his pride and joy, looking limp and lifeless.

Linc had celebrated when his papa had begun accepting invitations to smaller charity events. He’d hoped that being around his peers would lift his spirit and it had helped… some. But the first time he’d heard a little of the joy that had abounded in his home his whole life was at the mention of him dating. And not just dating, possibly seriously.

Admittedly, Linc had dug his own grave knowing that his papa would believe it was serious by the sheer fact he’d deemed it worth mentioning.

Linc had made a point to separate any of his… encounters from his family, in general, and hadn’t brought anyone home since Asher.

Although he’d never told his parents exactly what had happened, he was sure they knew because they’d never mentioned a thing about him canceling his engagement. Simply asking if he was ok, and good riddance.

Linc may have sworn off commitment for himself, but he realized for his papa, and just seeing the spark of joy in his eyes, he would do anything. Even present a fictional omega.

He just needed to find said omega.

Linc sighed. And began walking, just needing some time to himself. But apparently, luck wasn’t on his side because as he turned the corner, Linc heard a voice, and he could immediately tell the person was crying.

Linc was about to go back the way he came when he heard a pleading voice say, “I have nowhere else to go, you can’t do this to me.”

He knew he shouldn't eavesdrop but the distress in the voice had him frozen and listening. Linc watched the figure illuminated from behind with light from inside the house, and twinkling lights that had been placed strategically in the large backyard. At least the part of the yard that the omega, Linc guessed from his size, was standing in.

There was a shell shocked look on the man’s face when he looked at the phone. Apparently, the other caller had hung up. Linc watched as the lone figure double over as if in pain, and had to restrain himself from rushing over in aid. His mind and body pushing him to do just that.

Linc had a feeling that the man wouldn’t appreciate knowing someone was observing what was clearly a very emotional and distressing situation. Linc would bet it wouldn’t go over well. So he held his position.

But the lone figure tugged at his heart. The man looked lost; his face in the shadows, haunted.

Linc felt like a statue with how still he was standing. He wasn’t accustomed to indecision, but neither did he feel like it was any of his business to get involved in a situation that didn’t concern him.

After seeing the man try to pull himself together several times, and fail, he couldn’t take it anymore.

Linc watched as the man placed his hands on his belly––he was right, he was an omega––and he heard the words, “we’ll be okay, daddy will figure something out,” and the situation suddenly became even more tragic to him.

Fuck, the omega was pregnant and had apparently just lost his home.

Linc decided he should probably stop observing the man in what clearly was a vulnerable moment and began backing away. But apparently, he should have turned around because he backed into something and heard a crash.

It wasn’t loud enough to bring anyone from inside the house, but definitely loud enough for the omega to realize he wasn’t alone.

“Fuck,” Linc swore.

“Who’s there?” Linc heard a soft voice ask.

He considered backing away and going inside. It wasn’t like the omega had seen his face. But for some reason, he just couldn’t do it.

“Don’t mind the weeping omega in the corner, I’ll be out of here in a moment and you can have the place to yourself,” Linc heard the man call out.

For some reason, the man’s attempt at a joke even in his current state and the fact that Linc’s alpha instincts were pushing to help the clearly distressed omega, had him moving forward.

Linc walked up silently until he was standing in front of the omega. He reached a hand down to the man in the universal give you a hand getting up sign. He knew the man could see him. His shoes were in his line of sight even with his bowed head.

So he simply waited.

The smaller man slowly lifted his head, so Linc stood still, in case his imposing height frightened the man in any way… and waited till their eyes connected. And when they did, it was like a punch to the solar plexus as he met what could only be described as the clearest blue eyes he’d ever seen.
