The man frowned and began speaking, then stopped, pursing his lips instead.
“That’s what I thought,” Luca sighed, and turned to walk away. The man needed a pretend boyfriend for a day. Or something. What happened when that ended? Luca would be back to where he started.
“Wait,” the alpha called.
Was that a pleading note in the man’s voice?
“What if I say you can stay as long as you need? I could even help with the job situation after you have the baby,” the alpha said.
“Why?” Luca insisted. Why would the man be so kind?
“Why not? Can’t I just do something out of the goodness of my heart?” The man queried, an exasperated look on his face.
“People don’t generally do those,” Luca insisted.
“Maybe you need to meet new people,” Linc replied. “Just say yes,” the alpha cajoled. “I can even give you references, I promise I’m not a crazy ax-wielding murderer.”
“Isn’t that exactly what a crazy ax-wielding murderer would say?” Luca snorted.
“We can go inside and Grayson will vouch for me. Surely you trust your friend’s husband?”
Luca frowned. Well, when the alpha put it like that.
“Say yes,” the alpha replied.
Luca smiled a little at the man, he liked Grayson. He saw the way the man treated his friend, and Riley had said that Grayson only had a few friends he trusted. Luca would assume the man fit the bill. Then again he could be making assumptions out of desperation.
He had a good feeling about the alpha. But could he trust his instincts after Frankie? His instincts had led him to hide his account from Frankie. Not that it had done him any good.
You could have a roof over your head and time to breathe and figure shit out. Luca had grown up around people like the alpha and he recognized wealth when he saw it. So he knew that he wouldn’t be living in squalor. And Luca would kill for some high thread count sheets, and a hot shower that lasted longer than three minutes before the water went cold. He would also like to sleep the whole night without worrying about rodents.
“I’ll find a way to earn my keep, maybe housework and cooking. My room door has to have a lock.”
The alpha smiled, “Yes to the lock, and the rest we’ll figure out.” The man glanced briefly at Luca's belly, “We’ll figure everything out... later.”
Luca sighed and stretched his hand out. “Luca,” he said.
The alpha took his outstretched hand in a handshake, but his eyebrow raised in question.
“That’s my name, Luca…if we are going to live together or whatever, I figured you should know it.”
The man smiled again. Fuck he should have like a warning sign before unleashing that smile on unsuspecting folks. “Lincoln, Linc, my friends call me Linc.”
“Lincoln, Linc,” Luca repeated.
He liked it.
It fit the man.
Luca hoped like hell he wasn’t making the next biggest mistake of his life.
“Alright then, Lincoln, Linc, you have a deal.”
“Linc, just Linc,” the alpha replied.
