One Year Later
It’s the first night of Skyler’s tour, and Trevor is here backstage, ready and waiting. Skyler’s not saving the big surprise for the end of tour this time. Because this is something he plans to do in every city, on every stage.
He’s not even holding out until the last song. Which is good, because the anticipation was almost enough to make him forget the lyrics of the first four he sang.
It’s bold as hell what they’re about to do. When he asked Trevor if he was sure he wanted to do it this way, Trevor told him, “I made you wait ten years for this. Might as well make a spectacle of it.”
And yeah, it’s definitely going to be a spectacle, but a great one.
Half these fans probably know already. But they don’t know know.
Well, they’re about to now.
He walks to the edge of the stage and addresses the crowd, struggling to tame his smile enough to get the words out. “You guys have been great so far. I can feel the energy and the love you always give me, and I want to say thank you for that. Now for this next song, if you don’t mind, I’d like to invite someone very special out here to sing it with me.”
The crowd cheers in anticipation.
“Not only is he my former bandmate,”—the screaming grows louder—“but he’s also the love of my life.”
Now the sound of the crowd is deafening.
And that’s Trevor’s cue.
Skyler turns, waiting for him to stroll out. For a moment, he’s almost worried Trevor won’t be there, will have changed his mind.
But there he is.
Walking toward him.
Ready to tell the world that he’s Skyler’s.
He’s mine, he’s mine, he’s mine.
Skyler slips his ring out of his pocket and onto his finger, and when Trevor reaches him, he takes Skyler’s hand, their matching rings glistening under the stage lights.
Then Trevor winks at him and says into the microphone, “Hey, husband.”
Skyler’s heart cheers even louder than the crowd.
Someone hands them each a guitar, and Skyler feels invincible when he spots Jermaine, Oli, and Noah standing off to the side in the VIP section, going as wild as the fans. After waiting for things to calm down a bit, he and Trevor start to play. When they sing, their voices complement each other perfectly. The sun and the stars.
On the album, Skyler sang “He’s Mine” alone.
But it was always meant to be a duet.
