“Start with any box?” I asked.
“Might as well. They all need to be unpacked.”
I set my wine on the glass coffee table and used a box cutter nearby to cut open the tape. Sean’s place had built-in bookshelves, so I walked over to it with a stack of picture frames while he opened another box.
As I was arranging the frames, one of the photos caught me off guard.
“Who’s this?” I asked, pointing to a guy who looked familiar.
Sean came closer. “That’s my son, Ryan. You probably remember him from Fallon’s wedding.”
I sucked in a small breath. I knew Ryan, and it wasn’t from Fallon’s wedding. “Your son?”
Sean arched a brow. “Yeah.” He was probably wondering why I had a look of horror on my face. “Why?”
“I … ah … shit …”
“What?”
I marched back to my wine and chugged it. “Okay, don’t freak out.”
I was the one freaking out but only because I wasn’t sure how Sean was going to take the news.
“Spit it out, Dec.”
“Okay.” I took a deep breath. “A few years ago, I met Ryan at a club and we … ah … you know.”
Sean blinked. “Had sex?”
I nodded, not able to find any more words.
“Oh …” He walked over to the large window that overlooked the twinkling lights. “You had sex with my son and we just …”
“Yep,” I drew out the word. “But I didn’t even know his name, and I made it clear I wasn’t interested in more than a one-night stand.”
Sean turned away from the window and I braced myself for his reaction. After a moment of tense silence, he let out a long sigh and ran a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. “Well, shit,” he muttered under his breath.
I winced, waiting for him to explode in anger or disappointment. Instead, he surprised me by letting out a short laugh and shaking his head.
“Of all the clubs in all the cities, my son had to walk into the one where you were?” he said, a wry smile on his lips.
I couldn’t help but let out a nervous chuckle. “It was at Chrome, which is kinda the “it” place to go now.”
“Well, I can’t say I expected this little bombshell today, but I appreciate your honesty.”
I moved to him and grabbed one of his hands. “I’m really sorry. I didn’t know he was your son, and it was a long time ago. I promise it didn’t mean anything.”
He cupped my cheek. “Hey, it happened before us, and what’s done is done.”
“Thanks for not freaking out,” I said sincerely. “I wouldn’t want this to make you see me any differently.”
He dropped his hand. “I don’t think I will, but I do need to talk to Ryan.”
“Of course. But just so you know, it was purely sex. What I feel for you is so much more.”
He leaned in and brushed his lips over mine. “I feel the same way.”
