Camille and I shared a look and then I hurried to his office. He wasn’t alone.
“Yes, sir?”
Sean’s gaze heated at my words, but he quickly recovered and gestured to the open chair between Luke Nolan and Eli Torrance. “Have a seat.”
I took the seat Sean indicated. Luke and Eli were both partners of the firm and seeing them in Sean’s office alongside him meant it wasn’t going to be an ordinary morning meeting. Had he told them we fooled around, and he wanted not to keep the secret from the firm? It wasn’t as though Luke’s affair was public knowledge. Though I was certain everyone in the office knew, people kept it hush-hush because Luke was married.
“Declan,” Sean began as he took his seat on the other side of the desk. “I hope you had a good weekend.”
“It was all right,” I replied, trying to keep my tone steady despite the butterflies swirling in my stomach.
“You weren’t drunk the entire time while celebrating?” Luke asked.
“Only Friday night.” I looked across at Sean. “Don’t remember getting back to my place, to be honest.”
Sean cleared his throat. “Well, we’re glad you're safe and at work today.”
“Thanks.” I smiled a small smile.
Sean continued. “We’ve called you in here because, as you know, I’ve been observing your work closely over the past few months, and I’m impressed with your dedication and diligence. Your commitment to the cases you’ve worked on hasn’t gone unnoticed.”
I felt a surge of pride wash over me at his words, but I kept my expression neutral, not wanting to show too much emotion just yet. “Thank you.”
“And,” Sean went on, “as we’ve discussed previously, we’re pleased officially to promote you to junior associate, effective immediately.”
A rush of excitement coursed through me, threatening to break through the calm facade I’d been trying to maintain. This was the moment I’d been eagerly awaiting since starting law school.
“Thank you all.” I beamed. “Happy to be an attorney officially for Ashford, Nolan & Torrance.”
We all stood, and the three men shook my hand. Luke and Eli went for the door, and I followed behind them until Sean said, “Declan. Have a minute to discuss the Barker case?”
“Of course.” I turned back around.
Once the other partners were gone, Sean closed his door. We stood facing each other, and I was seconds from kissing him, but I had to wait for his move.
“You had a good weekend?” he asked me again.
“It would have been better if I’d seen you.”
“Sorry.” He cupped my face with one hand and brushed my cheek with his thumb before pulling away. “I was busy packing. Still not done, and I’m moving this weekend.”
“You know, I’m a really good packer.”
“Oh, yeah?” He chuckled.
I nodded with a grin.
“Well, in that case,” Sean said, closing the distance between us even more, “how about you come over to my place after work today? I could definitely use some help, and it would give us a chance to ... catch up about your weekend.”
I couldn’t help but smile at his suggestion. “I’d love to. Consider me your packing assistant for the evening.”
“Great.” There was a hint of excitement in his eyes. “It’s a date then.”
Warmth raced through me at the word ‘date’, and before I could think twice, I leaned in and pressed my lips against his. There was only a brief slip of his tongue before he pulled away, but instead of being the we-can’t-do-this Sean, he was smiling from ear to ear.
“I’ll see you after work at my house.” His voice was low and husky.
“I’ll be counting down the minutes.”
