“What are you guys doing out here, anyway?” I asked as we walked into the lobby. “Don’t you usually park in the parking garage?”

“There weren’t any spaces left.” Morgan pouted. “I had to park in that garage down the street.”

“Yeah, I figured your other spot was now reserved for this guy.” Ryan nodded at Declan. “So, I parked a couple of blocks away too.”

We headed up to my floor. “Well, I’m happy you guys could come over for dinner, even if the parking is super inconvenient,” I joked.

Tonight was the first time Declan would join us for our family dinner, and I hoped it was another step toward everyone healing from the hurtful things my kids had said about him.

Once inside my place, we set the boxes down in our bedroom, and then we all gathered around the already set dining table while Jasper put the final touches on what would be the last family meal he made for us.

I poured us all a glass of wine while we waited.

Morgan took a sip and said, “So, now that Declan has a new car, what are you doing with the Escalade?”

“I’m not sure,” I admitted. “It’s parked at Declan’s old place right now. But we can’t leave it there for long.”

“Sorry to interrupt, but dinner is ready.” Jasper came in and placed a platter of pot roast with roasted asparagus and a bowl of mashed potatoes on the table.

“As always, you’ve outdone yourself,” I praised. “We’re going to miss you around here, and not just because of the amazing food you serve.”

He glanced at Ryan briefly and replied, “I’m going to miss all of you as well. I’ve enjoyed working here very much.”

After one more look at my son, he returned to the kitchen.

“So, about the Escalade,” Morgan continued. “I was thinking you should trade it in.”

Ryan barked out a laugh. “You were upset because Dad let Declan borrow it, but now you don’t want him to keep it?”

“Well, yeah.” She shrugged. “It had nothing to do with the vehicle. I just thought he was after our money.”

“Gee, thanks.” Declan chuckled.

“I don’t necessarily feel that way anymore,” she huffed. And while she sounded irritated, I didn’t miss the slight grin she flashed in his direction.

“Anyway, if you trade in the Escalade, and I trade in my car, we’d have a nice down payment on a BMW M8 I’ve had my eye on.”

“Typical,” Ryan muttered, and I could hold back my laugh.

While some things never changed, others kept getting better. Sitting with my boyfriend and my children, sharing a meal, and having a good laugh, I couldn’t think of anything better than that.

The End.
