“Did you tell him about it?”
I nodded. “I toldher. Well, actually I also said …”
“Said what?” he prompted after I didn’t say anything because I’d realized what I’d actually said to her when I’d thought I sent her the text.
“Nothing.” I averted my gaze.
“Oh, come on. You have to tell me now.”
I felt my cheeks heat. Lord, I had never been so embarrassed in all my life. I should have just kept my mouth shut and the text would have been long forgotten. “I … uh … said I wish I had taken your picture and sent that too.”
He didn’t say anything. Once I was brave enough, I peeked over at him to see he was staring at me. I could barely make out the smirk on his lips, but it was there. “Go on.”
“What do you mean ‘go on’?” I laughed nervously.
“Why’d you want my picture to send to her?”
Was he baiting me? “I actually meant so I could have a pic of you on my phone,” I admitted.
Sean was still grinning. “Well, I’m flattered. Didn’t know I was photo-worthy.”
I rolled my eyes, trying to play off my embarrassment. “Please, I’m sure ladies bring you baked goods nightly.”
His laughter was boisterous, and I had to join in because I liked watching him laugh.
“Bringing me baked goods? Are we in the 1950s?”
I lifted a shoulder. “I don’t know. I don’t date women.”
“No, you just play the field, right?”
“Is that what I said?” Damn. I really needed to stop drinking.
“Something like that.”
“I guess that’s true, but I don’t really date though.”
“No?”
I shook my head. “Just a little nighttime fun sometimes.”
“Damn, it’s been a long time since I had some ‘nightly fun’.”
“All right, so the lady from the wedding is out, but didn’t you say your daughter suggested you date again?” He nodded, and I continued. “So, go date.”
He snorted a laugh. “I haven’t dated since my twenties. I don’t even know what to do.”
“I don’t think waiting for baked goods is the right way.”
“I wouldn’t turn them away, though.”
We were laughing so hard about the entire situation that I had tears in my eyes. When we finally stopped, everything became quiet, and we stared at each other. My gaze dropped to his lips and then back up to his dark brown eyes. He did the same, and I ever so slightly moved my head closer to his. I could have sworn he leaned in as well, so I went even further. With only a few inches separating our lips, he didn’t pull back. I ran my tongue along my bottom lip and, without any more hesitation, my lips met his.
The elevator jolted, and we scrambled to our feet as the lights came on and we started moving toward the ground again.
