But I couldn’t let Rafael do my job for me. I had to get my head back in the game. Hopefully, once Santino was dealt with, I’d have some more time with Luca.
When someone knocked on the door, I furrowed my brow and glanced at Luca, who only shrugged.
“It’s me,” Rafael said.
Shit. Was I supposed to have a meeting with him already?
But I really didn’t want to leave Luca.
“Come in,” I said.
“Everything’s ready,” Rafael said with a wide smile on his face.
“Santino?”
He nodded. “I’ll let you know about all the details later, but I just wanted to tell you that it’s happening tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” I gaped at him.
“The message has been sent. I don’t have any info about our wanted person just yet, but we might have that too soon enough. I’m confident my plan will work.”
“That’s great.” Finally some good news.
Even though I didn’t know all the details just yet, I trusted Rafael. He’d never fail me.
“Yeah.” He grinned. “I’ll be waiting for you in our secret room so we can discuss everything that needs to be done and so you can see if you approve of my plan.”
“I’ll be right there.”
“All right. See you later.” Rafael closed the door.
Since we were still trying to figure out who the mole was, we had to be careful, so we’d found a special room in the house that was just for us.
It was small and empty, and it was super easy to check for any bugs. Plus, it was soundproof.
Rafael and I were the only ones who should know absolutely everything about our plan.
“I want to go with you,” Luca said, and I raised an eyebrow at him.
“Um, I—”
“I don’t mean now. I mean tomorrow. If you’re going to fight, I want to be there.” His eyes were hard on mine.
“Absolutely not. This isn’t your fight.”
“But it is, because you’ll be there. I want to be there for you. I want to make sure you’re safe. I’ve been training. Rafael can tell you I’m getting better at it every day.”
“No.” I wasn’t about to put his life at risk.
He’d be a distraction too.
“I thought you promised me I’d be your equal,” he said. “Is that not what your boyfriend is supposed to be?”
“This isn’t one of those things. I’m the boss and I decide. You don’t need to put yourself at risk for me. I’m going to have all the protection I need.”
“But—”
“No, Luca. You’re staying here. End of story. I’ll call you as soon as it’s done, okay?”
