“No, I’ll tell Luca myself.” I wanted to see him. “You talk to everyone else and let all the other guards who will be on duty with Luca later know what they need to do. We need to be careful about this. I don’t want Luca to get a chance to do something we’re all going to regret.”
“All right,” Rafael said.
Watching Luca on live feed was less fun than I’d expected.
I wanted the real deal, and I wanted to see how he’d react when I told him what I intended to do. Hopefully, he wouldn’t ruin the whole thing and do something stupid.
I strode to Luca’s room, and when I opened the door, I found him standing in front of the window and looking out under the watchful gaze of his guards.
He turned to look at me.
“Hey,” I said, giving him a smile.
He didn’t move, just watched me with interest.
“I have some news. Since you turned out to be so helpful with your idea, I decided you should get something in return.”
His brow furrowed. “Like what?”
“You’ll be allowed out of this room, and you’ll be able to use everything on this floor that my people use. Your guards will be with you all the time, so don’t try anything stupid. This is a privilege that may easily be taken away, and I hope you understand that.”
“I do.” The fire in his eyes burned brighter, or maybe it was just the way the light fell into his eyes.
If he was happy or excited to go out of this room, he didn’t show it.
Hmm.
He’d shown surprise before, but now he was completely closed off to me and I was unable to read him.
How the hell did he manage that?
“Come then,” I said to him, and then went closer to the guards and lowered my voice so that Luca wouldn’t be able to overhear every word. “Keep a very good eye on him. You need to be like his shadow. Make sure he stays away from anyone with a weapon. We don’t want him to get his hands on one.”
The guards nodded.
Luca followed me out into the hallway. He looked around, his eyes scanning every detail. Was he trying to memorize every single thing so he could try to escape when he got the chance?
Except, he wasn’t going to get that chance.
I’d make sure of it.
Getting out of this place was impossible, even if he somehow slipped past all the guards on this floor.
“The gym is right at the end of this hallway,” I said, pointing at the dark blue door. “You can use any of the equipment there.”
“What’s behind the red door?” he asked.
“It’s a gaming room. You can play video games there.”
“And the yellow one?”
“Lunchroom. Whenever you’re hungry, you can go there and pick something to eat. Your meals will no longer be brought to your room.”
“What about all the other doors? The plain brown ones?” He tilted his head at me.
“They’re offices and private rooms. Nothing interesting there.”
When Luca’s gaze met mine, something told me that I’d said the wrong thing.
