Cal releases a shuddering breath. “You’re making it really hard to argue.” He makes it sound like a complaint.

“Then don’t.”

Cal nods, and reaches for Dawson, cradling his face between his palms. “I swear, I’m going to spend the rest of my life proving that I’m worthy of you.”

Dawson surges up to kiss him, his heart soaring with happiness. “Just keep making crepes and we’re good.” One more kiss, and then he rises to his feet, his knees creaking. “I’m at the shelter today. You want to come with?”

Cal shakes his head. “I think I’m going to pay Ellis a visit.”

“Isn’t he at work?”

“I have my card to let me in.”

Oh boy.“Don’t be mad at him. He just did what I asked him to.”

Cal doesn’t look convinced. “We should still talk.”

Ah, well. You win some, you lose some. Dawson will owe Ellis the best dinner of all time.

“Okay. I’m gonna get ready.” He groans when Donut brushes against his leg. He’d completely forgotten about him. He’s the worst dog dad ever. “Shit. Could you walk Donut before you go? I don’t want to be late.”

“Already have,” Cal says. “But I’ll take him again later.”

Dawson can’t help it. He kisses him again. And one more time after that. “Love you.”

Cal caresses his cheek. “Love you too.”

Chapter 27

AfterCal’sUberdropshim off at the office building, he rings Ellis’ number.

“Cal?”

“Hey. I’m downstairs. Are you free?”

“Downstairs? As in here? In the building?” Ellis asks, sounding alarmed.

“Yes.”

“Jesus,” he breathes. “Can you call next time?”

“I’m calling now.”

“That’s not—” He cuts himself off and groans. “I’m at a meeting. Come on up, Amanda will let you into my office. Can you wait half an hour?”

Since he’s already here…

“I can wait.”

“Good. Do you have your card?”

“I do.” He fishes the card out of his pocket. “Which floor is it?”

“27th. I’ll let Amanda know you’re coming,” Ellis says and hangs up.

Cal can’t blame him for being short with him. He is ambushing him after all. It serves Ellis right for keeping such important things from him. But he’s not here to argue with Ellis about what he should or shouldn’t have done. He just wants to talk.

Entering the lobby, Cal gives the place a sweeping glance. If he was the workaholic that everyone claims, something here should ring a bell; but so far, nothing. He heads towards the lifts, swiping his card and pressing the button for the 27thfloor.
