Mrs. Adams smiles at me as I study the documents that she printed for me. She’s going next door to collect something from her church sister. “I’ll be back soon, mi affi go see what Vinette have for me,” she tells me.

“Okay Mrs. Adams mi a gwan see what mi can get from these documents,” I say before I start reading again. She walks out.

As I keep reading the documents, I jot down notes and watch videos to clarify things.

I feel a wave of relief. Then, a noise from the living room snaps me out of it, and I look up, startled.

A wah that? I move slowly off the chair and poke my head out of the room and gasp when I see Mr. Adam’s quickly walking out with a young girl.

Mi raatid! She looks like she’s in her early twenties and I’m sure he’s in his sixties. What a dutty piece a man!

I feel so bad for Mrs. Adams. She’s such a lovely lady, and she doesn’t deserve any of this.

I lean back, trying to figure out what to do.

I’ve got two options, but both come with consequences, making the decision damn near impossible.

When I think about it, it’s always easier to just mind my business, but damn…

Mrs. Adams is too kind. Should I really just sit here and pretend I don’t know her husband’s out there cheating with younger girls, possibly giving her an STD?

She really doesn’t deserve that. Aye!! Mi nuff enuh. It’s for a good cause…

And also when I think about it, what would happen if I talk?

That could put me in danger because he would know I told her.

He’s such an arrogant man and if he’s bringing woman in his house while his wife is just a room away he’s capable of doing anything.

And look how the news dem disturbing... mi nuh wah be the next headline. If I laugh I dieeee!

Hello miss yuh forget who your boyfriend be... wah that man could a possibly do yuh?

Alright, so let’s say I go to her and she throws him out or divorce him. Wouldn’t I be the reason for all that? What if her heart is weak and she gets a heart attack or her blood vessel burst? A my conscience it would a deh pan. Egg–Zackly. This bigger than me, mek mi leave it alone.

I get back to studying with it on my mind. It’s so unfortunate on Mrs. Adam’s side. With a sigh, I shake my head to rid myself of those thoughts and focus on the video until she’s back.

“How is it going?” She asks and I look at her. Why him a do this to the woman?

“Um it’s going good,” I retort and she smiles. Mi distracted.

“Okay good and I see you watching videos, that’s a smart way to cover the wide topics,” I nod at that.

I feel so guilty knowing that I know something this serious and I’m holding it back. I don’t even know if it’s my place to tell her. Ugh mi hate this!

Why mi neva have in an earphone fi nuh hear the sound? Jesus.. Mi wouldn’t feel this guilty. I feel as though im carrying a 100 tonne load on my back knowing this information.

“You look stress you can take a break enuh,” If only she knew.

“You eat turkey neck?” she questions and I nod slowly.

“Long time mi nuh eat it,” I tell her. “Alright mi did cook up some mi a go just steam some rice... that’s okay?”

“Yeah,” I smile. She walks out shortly after. I open my phone and call Nickoi and Rick’s face pops up causing me to smile.

“Wah gwaan sis?”Sis? Nickoi friends a come round mon.

“Heyy can I talk to Nickoi?” I can see that he’s at our home. The background noisy bad!

The Outlawz are talking at once. I can hear an ear shattering meld of video game and music playing too.Wah dem a gwan wid? No sahh. Nickoi a have boys getaway with his friends. How cute... mi spot Gutta and Junior too.

“Wifey pan the phone,” Rick hands the phone to him. He takes it, sitting it on his lap, eyes on the screen. Watch ya!?

“Sir!” I call with an attitude, his eyes falls to the camera with a smile only I can put on his face. He gestures his hand to his brother.

“Yea Zara distract the bwoy fi mi deh,” Gutta laughs and I hear cars speeding.

Ohh, they’re playing Need for speed. Gutta nuh easy enuh. Nickoi quickly gives Junior the control and walk outside.

“Deh pon?” he asks and I look around me.

“I’m in a situation,” I whisper and he furrow his brows.

“Kinda situation?” Concern etched on his face. “Nuh the teacher lady yard yuh deh?”

“Yea..” I take a glance behind me.

“Why yuh keep looking around... wah a happ’m? Mi need fi get the clip load?”

I blush and say. “I saw her husband cheating babe and I don’t know if I should tell her or not.”

“Doh tell har,” Why am I not surprised?

I breathe. “Okay.”

“Always hear mi mother seh yuh nuh fi get in a couple problems... wi nuh know the reason him a do that yuh zi mi,” Nickoi adds. “Wah you go over there fi do?”

“Fi she help mi study,” I answer.

“Meds that,” he says in a mind your business tone.

“Okay baby I love you.”

“Love you too,” he rasps. “What time mi fi come fi yuh?”

“3 o’ clock,” I say as I quickly glimpse the time.

“Ah,” he nods. I stare at him and he blushes looking away.

“Yuh nah hang up?” my cheeks heat up as my chocolate eyes pierce him.

“Yah... later,” he hangs up. You really love him enuh. Like life itself.

Moments after, my eyes are buried in the documents. Mr. Adams joins me after, giving me an idea of how the exam may be set up. Once we’re through with studying, she shares our food and we eat together in the kitchen. Her husband enters and my mood drops immediately.

“Hey hunny,” she smiles and I mentally groan. Him is not no hunny him is a piece of shit!

“I’m gonna run some errands quickly and get back here for dinner. I love you,” he pecks her lips and I roll my eyes. Not a love, a the gyal him a guh sleep wid.

“Okay be careful,” she hugs him. The lady love him enuh and him a hurt har. Why man suh wicked?

When it’s 3:00, I tell Mrs. Adams my goodbyes before I embrace her. “I’m gonna pray for you and I know you’re gonna pass your exams.”

“Thanks for helping me.” I feel a little confident..

“Always and you can visit me anytime,” she tells me and I smile before entering the car.

“Hey babe,” I hug him.

“You a rush fi go back home?” he shakes his head no. “Why?”

“Wanna stop at Mama for a while,” I say as he drives off.

“Ah,” he says.

When I get there, I realize that Mama and my mother are inside cooking while Gavin is telling them a story.

I push the door open walking in with Nickoi behind me.

Gavin spots me and his smile grows. “Watch the dolly!? In Sash’s voice,” he says and I laugh.

Cya tek him enuh. Mama and my mother look around smiling.

“Hey,” mommy smiles.

“Nickoi what a way you a take weh mi granddaughter,” Mama chuckles and Nickoi glances at her with a smile. Why Mama nuh stop? Nickoi smile fake mi know fi sure.

“Which take weh?” Mommy chimes in. I guess she notices that Nickoi is uncomfortable. “See him bring her come look fi wi, if him did take har weh yuh wouldn’t see har at all,” At least she a try fi mek him feel at home. She approaches him.

“What’s up?” she starts, and I look away from their conversation.

“Where is yuh twin?” I tease Gavin, trying to distract myself.

He rolls his eyes. “Sash could neva be my twin.” I laugh.

“She’s your sister so stop talk suh,” I jeer him.

“The old sore find new man it seems,” he frowns. Him a sample enuh.

“Jesus piece Gavin,” I slap my hand over my mouth.

“Mi nuh done cook enuh but mi have cookies unuh wah that?” Mommy offers.

“Mi fren a cook at home enuh so the cookie alone is alright,” Nickoi retorts.

“Who cooking babe?” I just want to release some of the tension.

“Rick... him a big Chef,” he chuckles. Eeeeh?

“Mi neva know them still deh home enuh,” I smile.

When we’re done eating the cookies, mommy gives us muffins but Nickoi didn’t take the muffin. I did though.

“You probably full,” Gavin grins. I’m actually not full.

“Hey wi a go lef enuh,” Nickoi announces. “Take care of unuh self,” he hugs them quickly.

“Later,” I wave trying to catch up Nickoi as he gets in the car.

Why him a move so fast? I get in the car and put on my seatbelt. “Nickoi put on your seatbelt,” he does as I say.

“I love you,” I say, pressing a kiss to his cheek.

He’s upset, even if he’s not really showing it. “And on behalf of Mama, I’m sorry.” She made him uncomfortable—thankfully, Mommy noticed and cheered him up. He doesn’t say anything as he drives off, honking the horn.

“Thomas at home enuh,” he says instead. “Him ready fi start the driving lessons,” I smile.

“Yes... full time,” I’m excited. If yuh know how me well wah drive my car. Hot yuh hot.

I don’t know why I expect an old man—maybe because Nickoi calls him Thomas, and that just sounds like an elderly name. Yeah, that must be it. But when I get there, anyone would think we’ve known each other for years. He doesn’t start the conversation like a typical stranger.

“From yesterday mi did fi come enuh Zara but Jah know the wuk have mi a way,” he tells me and I chuckle.

“School have mi a way too,” I say. Mi feel comfortable with him already and mi literally just meet him a minute ago.

“You ready though?” he asks. “A big car yah go push enuh so yuh affi ready.” He answers his own question and I laugh. Nickoi is laughing too.

“Mi ready mon,” I smile.

He nods. “Have to,” he chuckles and I realize that Nickoi and I are holding hands involuntarily. Watch yerrrr.

I didn’t even notice and I’m sure he doesn’t notice either. So cuteeeeeeee.

“Hey Zara when wi done not even Nickoi cya drive like yuh enuh,” he bumps fist while looking at Nickoi. He has a sense of humor.

Nickoi laughs. “As long as she can start drive har car bad man,” he says to Thomas.

“No joke fam and she know the basics already?” He asks and Nickoi nods. Fam? Dem related?

“Sup’m like that,” Nickoi jokes and Thomas laughs before he gives me an apologetic smile. “I had to,” he says softly and I laugh again. From mi meet him, him just mek mi a laugh. “Just take care a har,” Nickoi tells him between their handshake.
