Nickoi

I stare at the wall for what feels like an hour.

The wull thing a foolishness. After Rick called me telling me about Gina’s passing, I spoke to him for a while.

I was comforting him until his family members linked him so he had to hang up.

I got home, showered and ordered a salmon burger and my comfort snack.

Pepper shrimp. A lot of them. Now I’m calling Juaqína.

The door pulls and she walks in. “Mi hear seh Gina no make it,” her voice low as she sits beside me.

I face palm myself. At this point mi nuh need fi a think bout the situation no more because mi already have a plan.

With a sigh I shake my head. Gina. Jah jah.

Look how mi see har the day and she did good.

A suh life mess up though... today yuh deh yah tomorrow yuh gone.

Mi feel like a mi cause this pon har though.

Nickoi doh blame yourself.

“Yah... the thing set a way,” I sigh drinking my water.

“How yuh eat Salmon burger?” She asks, cringing.

I hiss. Mi nuh in a the mood fi small talk. Badness mi a deal wid. Cause Carlos affi dead. “So mi link one a mi Genius and him gi mi dah address yah fi Carlos,” I tell her, handing my phone to her.

She hands it back to me after a while. I already spoke to her about the plan over the phone. She thought it was too crazy for her at first. Which is ironic because nutt’n nuh too crazy fi Juaqína. She even go a the morgue, disguised as a pathologists and find out who the man dem be.

So why she cya dress up like an escort and distract Carlos? She’s much crazier than these scenarios, trust mi. And apart from the stuff that we have done in the pass, it’s safe to say Juaqína and Gutta are the best in my circle.

Dem nah go lef mi hanging under no circumstance. Mi see dem risk them life fi deal wid certain things fimme already and mi know seh nuff people wouldn’t do that. True meaning of loyalty.

“Alright,” she says looking. “Mi read him up and them say him love ginger,” she shares. Ginger?

“Eeeh?” I raise a brow.

All that the fool have pon social media?

“Is an article mi see it pon,” she adds. “So if mi want this fi work mi affi go get a ginger wig,” she declares. “Yes make mi see him club address again,” she stretches her hand towards my phone.

I show her, her smile sprouts. “Nuh Constant Spring this?”

“Yah.”

“So mi a go seduce him, and when mi lead him on, I’ll catch him in a vulnerable state. And that time, Gutta dem will surprise him?” She asks with a playful smile.

Dat is it.

“Yah... then you a go signal the Outlawz and unuh take him weh. Doh. kill. him,” I say the last part slowly. Mi wah kill him miself.

“Mi nah stop stress this. Mi all warn Gutta about it. Numerous times too because him trigger happy.”

I drink the rest of my water.

“Mi already tell unuh weh fi bring him. Mi cya deh deh. I’d be a suspect especially when mi and him daughter just lef, so mi a go need an alibi,” I say and going to Mystic Mountain to spend the day with Zara and her grandma sounds like the perfect alibi to me.

I smirk. “Mi have sup’m in mind... just maths up the thing and keep safe,” I tell her. She hugs me. A little too long.

“I still love you enuh,” she gently bites my ear. I look at her.

“Jua-” I start.

“Mi understand say you move on from that and you have a girlfriend now so mi nah go pass mi place,” she tells me as she gets up. I remain quiet.

Juaqína and I were messing around for a while but wi didn’t label it so I understand if she still has feelings for me. Zara in the picture now so I don’t feel the same about her anymore.

“Mi a make sure this work,” she walks toward the door, hair in a bob cut. She looks over her shoulder, eyes full of temptation. “And... mi did just wah tell yuh,” she smiles before she closes the door.

ZARA

“Zara, long time mi nuh see yuh. Yuh fi start come a church with yuh grandma,” Mrs. Olive says and I smile. She’s Mama’s church sister.

“One of them day yer I’ll come,” I tell her and baby Jesse holds my legs, using me for support as she makes her tiny steps. Awww.

Jesse is Mrs. Olive’s great granddaughter. Her mother is a friend of mine but she isn’t at home.

“Hey baby Jesse,” I smile, playing with her curly hair and she giggles.

“Jesse just a mek har steps, a weh day mi see she mek har first step and har father video it,” Mrs. Olive tells me.

“That’s good,” I smile looking at Jesse. She sits down, still holding my legs.

“She’s getting so big,” mommy beams and I nod, playing with Jesse’s tiny hands.

I look over at Gavin’s house next door and I spot Aunt Marcia. Dem reach already?

I smile at Jesse. “Mi a look fi my cousins now so later.”

She’s just staring at me with a smile. So sweet. I wave to her. “Ta Taa,” I smile and she starts creeping towards me. Mrs. Olive and my grandmother are looking.

My mother laughs. “She nah mek yuh lef enuh,”

“Ta Taa,” I say again moving towards the gate and her lips start trembling. Aww. “You don’t want me to leave you?” I say to the baby.

“Look like yuh affi go come up yer more often come look fi har,” Mama chimes.

“Yea, a just because of school and them thing deh,” I say to them. I lift her and she giggles causing everyone to laugh.

“So you gwaan?” I gently pinch her cheeks and her smile grows.

“Alright come mek wi par,” I move outside with her and the cold breeze hits me reminding me that it’s getting late.

“Give me a blanket for her,” I say and Mrs. Olive quickly walks inside. I smile at Jesse in my arms waiting for her grandma to come back with her blanket.

“Zara she love baby,” Mama laughs looking at my mom. “A same way she treat Vicky grand daughter enuh.”

“Because them so cute,” I chime in.

Mommy laughs. “Babies nice fi real.”

“I want my baby when I’m 26 when I know that I’m financially stable. hopefully,” I tell them.

“A when mi a 21 mi have you enuh,” my mother tells me and Mrs. Olive walks out, wrapping the blanket around Jesse.

I smile at Jesse, using my hand to hold her hands and wave it. “Say Ta Taa,” I say to her and she smiles looking at her fingers.

“Alright nuh take too long,” Mrs. Olive says and I nod. I walk over to Gavin’s house and his mom is laughing loudly on the veranda.

“Yuh nuh undastan? Doh falla dutty instagram people... do not falla dem, half a dem dunce like bat and have gadgets a control them, iz dem phone control dem,” I hear Shebada’s voice and I laugh to myself. I guess she deh pon him live.

“Good night,” I smile and she chuckles.

“Wah’m Zara,” She greets before she looks back at her phone. I walk inside and hear them laughing.

“You... is a dutty drancro!” Gavin exclaims. I know he’s laughing about something because of his tone.

“Wah mi do? Mi tell yuh seh it can wear,” Sash laughs.

“Today a when? Oh yeah, Octoba 23. Today mi see seh you gyal nuh love mi,” he continues.

A wah him a cuss Sash bout? I laugh to myself.

I push the door and they both look at me startled. As soon as Gavin realize it’s me he shows me a green pants, throwing it down in front of me.

“The gyal seh this look good pah mi,” he says sarcastically and I laugh, fixing Jesse on my hip. She’s sucking on her fingers and I take them out.

“Mi nuh like it,” I say looking at the pants. “It look old fashion.”

“Thank yuh... fi talk the truth nah go hurt yuh!” He says eyeing Sash who is dying from laughter.

“Mi just feel say him would a like it,” she laughs. Wicked gyal.

He throws the pants on her. “Why yuh dweet drancro?... Why!” I start laughing again.

“Nosah,” I sit, putting Jesse on my lap.

“Ol’ gal Jesse,” Gavin’s eyes her. “She wah sleep enuh.” He tells me. I look down at her as she rubs her eyes.

“Mi affi go carry har over soon,” I say watching her.

“Yeah but gyal wi a guh a one a Sash fren dem cake sale... just fi guh run up wi blood sugar level and have diabetes,” he jokes and I shake my head.

“Shut up... that nuh funny,” I laugh.

He laughs holding his chest. “A joke mi a mek.”

“Him follow mi back!” Sash laughs and we look at her.

“Who!?” We both ask.

She fans us off. “Unuh nah go know him.”

“Let me guess is a scamma?” Gavin cross his arms.

“Yes, mi wah scamma with the big money them. Helllerrrr,” she laughs out. I shake my head.

Gavin eyes us both. “Like mi affi go learn the craft,” he says in a sad tone and we laugh even more. “A trouble when me learn the game and the 3 beast drop!”

“Chraw!” I giggle.

“And him land in a mi dms! Jesus, life a happ’n fi me!” She exclaims again.

“Mi sick a you,” Gavin says disgusted.

I laugh out. “But fi real wah yuh think bout the cake sale tonight?” he asks. I don’t know. I’m tired from all the events from today.

That’s probably too much for me. I sigh. “Mi tired mon,” I say and he glares at me.

“If a yuh man seh fi ready and come yuh nuh tired though?” he retorts and I laugh. Cya tek Gavin dutty style enuh.

“Alright Alright,” I say with my hands up in surrender. “What time?”

“Now. Just get yuh self ready and carry back Deanne Pitney,” Gavin says and I shake my head. Him nah give up? If him wah sup’m it just affi work? Doh?

“Alright,” I breathe and spring to my feet.

Gavin so determined, him mean seh mi affi come .
