Page 73 of Hell Fae Warden
Heat rushed over my already warm skin as memories flickered behind my eyes. I gripped the talisman and focused on its cool energy, needing to ground myself and focus.
Yes, it was amazing. The best sex of my life. But that’s not important right now.
It was wishful thinking that it would happen again, especially if I escaped. Which I didn’t even know how to do. So there was no point in even thinking about it.
Or reveling in the memories.
Or craving more.
Particularly when I might be walking into my death.
Focus, Cami,I chastised myself, my gaze on the barrier. You can do this. Shoulders back. Head up. Face it straight on. You’ve done nothing wrong. You just need to convince Lucifer of that.
Besides, I’d faced plenty of devils throughout my life. Assholes at frat parties. Freaking Hellhounds. Not to mention my own father.
Of course, this was the literal devil, and he scared the shit out of me—an accurate phrase even if Melek didn’t care for it.
What’s Lucifer going to do to me?I wondered.Only one way to find out.
Stealing a deep breath, I pushed through the barrier and flinched as my necklace hummed to life. White light flittered over my vision, making me temporarily dizzy before Melek’s handsome form came into view.
“There’s my little angel,” Melek murmured, holding out his hand. “Come along, then. The best has yet to appear.”
I had no idea what he meant, nor did I know why I took his offered hand, but my mind felt cloudy like before, making me oddly susceptible to his charm.
He was probably drugging me.
Because it definitely had nothing to do with the fact that Melek had just led me into what were clearly his intimate quarters. And it absolutely wasn’t related to his angelic looks or that devastating smile he kept throwing at me.
Nope. Not attracted to him at all. Definitely not.
His hand squeezed mine as though he could hear my thoughts.Liar, that action said.
Or maybe that was my conscience tattling on me.
Melek hadn’t truly tried to hurt me despite his propensity for courting trouble on my behalf. He’d actually been the first one to really believe my story about my missing time. And he also seemed to be somewhat concerned with my protection. That was how I translated the talisman gift, anyway.
What about the feather?I wondered. What had that done to me?
It was on the tip of my tongue to ask, but as we moved by a door with horned rims, Melek distracted me by saying, “My hell.”
I blinked at him. “What?”
He merely winked and led me to another door just a few paces away. “And this will be your home sweet hell.”
“Do you meanroom? I mean, home?” The saying washome sweet home, right?
Rather than reply to my rambling—which I knew I was doing due to nerves—he pushed through the threshold to reveal a gorgeous suite beyond it.
My eyes widened. This is certainly an improvement from my previous cell.
Which I supposed made sense since we were in Lucifer’s personal quarters.
Suddenly, I much preferred my old accommodations with the metal bars and bespelled bed. Because this room was far too close to the Hell Fae King.
He’s going to kill me while I sleep,I realized.Or worse.
A hint of warmth fluttered over my skin, one that felt mysteriously like the feather again. Only there were no feathers and Melek wasn’t even looking at me when I glanced at him.
