CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
OLIVIA
I t was like déjà vu when Olivia woke up. The beeping sound of the monitors and the smell of antiseptic flooded her senses the moment she tried to open her eyes.
She doesn’t understand how she got here. The last thing she remembered was the burning hot pain that moved across her abdomen before she fell and blacked out.
Olivia did remember though, seeing the eyes of David as she laid there thinking that those were her last moments. Oh god, what happened to him?
Where is he? Will he be coming for her again? The rapid beeping of the monitor at the head of her bed told her that she was quickly on her way to another panic attack.
“Shhhhh. You’re okay, Little Bunny. Daddy’s right here.”
There was no way he was here. She remembered him talking to her in the warehouse, but Olivia thought that she had been imagining things.
“Daddy?”
“Yes baby, Daddy is here. I need you to try to calm down or the nurses are going to have to come in here and give you something.”
The next thing she knew, she was airborne again and he was getting into the hospital bed.
He laid her on his chest, picked up her hand, and placed it over his heart.
“Breathe with me, Little girl. Don’t worry about anything else but the beating of my heart and the breaths that I take.”
Determined to do exactly what her Daddy wanted her to do, Olivia turned her focus to feeling the rise and fall of Daddy’s chest and the beating of his heart under her fingertips.
“That’s such a good girl. You are doing such a good job.”
“Daddy, where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital, Little Bunny. You gave us all a scare.”
“What happened?”
“I won’t go into detail now, but you were stabbed in your abdomen by David. You were bleeding heavily when you got here, so they rushed you into surgery.”
“How did you find me?”
“Daddy told you he was never letting you go and I meant that. Nothing was going to stop me from finding my Little girl and bringing her home.”
“Am I still your Little girl?”
“As long as you want to be. Daddy loves you and wants nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you.”
She let out a small gasp. He loved her? There’s no way that he could love her after she tore his heart to shreds.
“Do you mean that?”
“Mean what, Olivia?”
“That you love me? I don’t know how you could when I broke your heart. I was mean and lied. I don’t deserve your love. ”
“Stop that nonsense right now. Is Daddy happy that you lied and tried to run from him? No, I’m not, but that doesn’t change the fact that I love you, Olivia Mae.”
“I love you, too, Daddy! I never thought I was going to be able to tell you those words out loud, but I shouted them loud in my mind, hoping that you were hearing them.”
Daddy smiled down at her before leaning down and pressing his lips on hers. Groaning, she opened her lips allowing him to deepen the kiss.
“I’ve got to stop, Little girl. You’re so tempting, but you're hurt.”
“I don’t hurt that badly, Daddy. We don’t need to stop.”
“Don’t even think about lying, Liv.”
She sighed at his words, but didn’t push the issue any further. Instead she snuggled in against Daddy’s chest and just enjoyed listening to the beat of his heart. It played her favorite song and she never wanted it to end.
Several moments passed again, before she spoke the question that has been bouncing around in her head since she woke up.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, babygirl?”
“What happened to David?”
“He’s dead, Olivia. You don’t have to worry about him coming for you anymore.”
The words sank in her mind and a sense of peace spread upon her. David was her husband and shouldn’t she be sad that he was dead? Olivia shocked herself at the next words she muttered out.
“Good, I’m glad he’s dead.”
She guessed that Daddy was waiting for her to fall apart at the news, but the feeling of remorse never came .
Olivia hated David and everything he did to her. At least now there was no way he could go on to hurt someone else.
“When can we go home, Daddy?”
It was another voice who answered her question, catching her off guard. “Once we can get the pain under control and are stable enough to fly, there’s no reason why you can’t go back home and continue your recovery there.”
Olivia just stared at the man who stood at the bottom of her bed. She assumed that this must be her doctor.
“It’s good to see your eyes, Ms. Carter. I’m Dr. Jones. I’m the one who has been over your care since you arrived.”
“Hi, Dr. Jones. Thank you for helping me.”
“You’re welcome. I did want to talk to you about the surgery you underwent and everything that we did after.”
Tensing, she snuggled closer into Daddy before nodding her head for him to continue.
“When you arrived you had suffered a great deal of blood loss already. We immediately rushed you back to surgery to repair the damage done to your abdomen. When we got in there we noted that the injury had penetrated your uterus. We did all that we could do, but I’m sorry to say that we couldn’t save your uterus. We had to do a hysterectomy.”
No, no, no. There was no way that this was happening. She was only twenty-two.
She still had her whole life ahead of her. One that she imagined was filled with babies. All of that faded as the words rang in her head. ‘You will never be able to have children.’
Olivia cried at the loss of the future she had always dreamed about. One that she dreamed she and Miles would have.
“Again, I express my deepest condolences.”
Numb, Olivia nodded her head at the doctor. Tuning out the droning on he did about the rest of the care she received, she retreated further into her mind.
David was still affecting her life even now. He inflicted one more lasting lesson on her and she doesn’t know if she will ever recover from this.
Olivia heard Daddy thank the doctor before gathering her further into his arms. It was that moment that Olivia broke.
All of the bottled up emotions that she had kept to herself over the years just poured out.
Nothing could stop the flood of tears that poured down her face. What felt like an eternity later, Olivia cried out her last tear and fell asleep.
A few more days passed before the Doctor finally deemed her stable enough for travel. After being discharged, Daddy bundled her up and flew her home.
Olivia doesn’t remember much of the following days. She floated in and out of reality and every time she came to, she remembered just what had happened to her and she pushed everything from her mind, not wanting to think of it.
During all this time, she never spoke a word. Days passed since she last uttered a word and she didn’t care.
Daddy never once pushed her to talk though. He just continued to remind her how much he loved her and that they would get through this together.
Once home, Olivia just allowed Daddy to take over completely. He helped bathe her before dressing her in a diaper and onesie.
He had started feeding her protein supplements with a bottle because she refused to drink or eat anything .
Daddy had given her a paci the first night home, when she woke up screaming from a nightmare. It brought her a calm that she needed and it was never far from her reach.
It was like he knew exactly what she needed and never pushed her to snap out of this. Daddy saw where she was mentally and met her there.
That first week home passed in a blur. Olivia spent most of her time lying in their bed just staring at the walls that surrounded her.
A few days into her second week home, Emmett and Rae came over to visit. That was the first day that she did anything other than lay in bed.
Rae had coached her into the nursery where they laid on the floor. Not speaking, but was just there. It was exactly what she needed.
Every day following their visit, Olivia would crawl out of the bed that her and Daddy shared, making her way into the nursery. There was something about being in there that gave her mind the calmness she wanted.
She slowly began playing with her toys again. Through it all Daddy sat with her and kept her company, never once forcing her to speak about what was going on in her mind.
This went on for weeks with her. As time passed, she was starting to feel more like herself instead of someone looking from the outside in.
Olivia realized, during everything that happened following the incident, she really enjoyed playing in the very Little headspace she had been in.
She loved being able to just let go and be because she knew that her Daddy was going to be right there to take care of her.
Everyday Daddy would get her dressed in a diaper and onesie, feed her a bottle, and then watch as she crawled around the house just as if she was a little baby. It was such a freeing feeling.
She hadn’t worked up the courage to actually use the diapers that she wore, but she knew that if she did Daddy wouldn’t have a problem taking care of her in that capacity as well. As much as she loved playing this young, Olivia knew that she couldn’t stay here forever.
Eventually, she was going to have to face the reality that was waiting for her and figure out how to move on with her life. The first step in doing that though would be to speak again.
Following her nightly bottle, Olivia laid curled up in Daddy’s arms watching a kids show that was playing on the T.V.
“I love you, Daddy.” she whispered out so quiet that she didn’t think that he had heard her.
Olivia felt him squeeze her just a little tighter before she heard “I love you, too, my Little Bunny.”
Everything was going to be alright, Olivia had faith in that.
