CHAPTER SIXTEEN

MILES

M iles had done his best to give Olivia the space she needed, but that was stopping now. It was time for him to go get his girl.

It had been almost two weeks since she safeworded him and that was enough time for her to work through whatever turmoil was going on in her mind.

The ringing of his cellphone pulled him away from his thoughts. Glancing down he notices that it’s Emmett calling.

“Hey man, what’s up?”

“Hey. Have you talked to Olivia recently?”

“No, I’ve been trying to give her space and time. Why what’s going on?”

“I’m sure it’s nothing, but Rae said that she missed the past couple shifts at work. Every time she tries to call it just goes straight to voicemail. Was just trying to see if you knew anything before we made a trip over to her house.”

“I don’t, but I don’t like the sound of this at all. Let me see if I can get a hold of her. ”

“Sounds good man. Let me know if you need anything.”

Hanging up the phone Miles quickly switched over to call Olivia.

“Hey! You’ve reached Olivia! Leave a message and I might return your call.”

A pit of dread settled into his stomach. Something felt off completely and Miles was trusting his gut on this one.

Miles: She didn’t answer. Something doesn’t feel right about this, so I’m headed to her house now. Meet me there?

Emmett: Yeah man. See you soon.

Grabbing his keys off the hook and petting Diesel on the head, Miles headed out the door.

Thirty minutes later, Miles raced up the steps of Olivia’s apartment like a man on a mission. The closer he got the worse his gut feeling became.

Nothing could have prepared him for the scene he walked into. Unlocking the door and heading inside her apartment, Miles looked over all the destruction that had ensued there.

There were clear signs that something went down there and someone put up a fight, but what could it be.

“Miles? Are you in there?” he heard Emmett yell from the front door.

“Yeah, I’m back here.”

He turned and made his way towards the living room when something on the floor caught his eye. Bending down Miles picked up the tattered remains of Nibbles.

There wasn’t much left of her and he knew it was going to break his Little girl’s heart that her precious stuffie was ruined.

“Miles, what is going on here.”

“Emmett, I have no clue, but this doesn’t look good at all. I’m going to call the cops, this just doesn’t sit right with me.”

“Good idea man. In the meantime let’s wait outside for them so we don’t ruin any more of the crime scene.”

While they headed outside to wait on the cops to arrive, Miles put out a call that he should have done a long time ago. Better late than never, he just hoped that it wasn’t too late.

After dealing with the cops and locking up her place, the guys headed back towards Emmett’s to work out what could have possibly gone on.

The cops wouldn’t give them any information because they weren’t next of kin or had really any connection to her besides being her friend.

Miles felt like his whole world was falling apart and he didn’t know how to fix it.

“Daddy! Did you find her?”

“No, we didn't find her baby. She wasn’t at her apartment.”

The men had already decided that they didn’t want to tell Raelyn about the condition of her apartment. That wasn’t something a Little girl needed weighing on her mind.

“None of this makes sense, Daddy. Why would she just disappear?”

“I don’t know, babygirl, but we are going to do what we can to bring her back.”

Miles watched Rae crawl into Emmett’s lap and his heart broke just a little bit more. He wanted nothing more than to be able to hold his Little girl like that, but he had to find her first.

“I’ve put out a call to an old friend from college and I’m waiting to hear back from him. I’m not sure if you remember him, his name is Beauregard, but only people who had a death wish called him that.”

“Yeah, I remember him. Beau was a year or two ahead of us right? ”

“Sure was. After he graduated he enlisted in the military and was a Navy Seal-Special forces to be exact. He’s out now and runs his own PI company. I’m hoping he might help with this situation.”

“Why would you need a PI, Uncle M? What’s going on that you aren’t telling me?”

Miles glanced at Emmett looking for his okay. There was no way that he was going to traumatize the sweet girl if her Daddy didn’t want that.

Getting the nod from Emmett, Miles took a deep breath before answering her question.

“When we got to her apartment it looked like a warzone. It had been destroyed and something about the situation just didn’t sit right with us.”

Rae was quiet for a little bit before she whispered “I wonder if this has something to do with the mystery texts and calls she was getting.”

“What are you talking about, Little Duckling?”

“Uh, well remember when Liv texted about wanting to come over and we had a sleepover?”

Emmett nodded at his Little girl waiting on her to continue.

“Well, she had a text come across her phone that struck her frozen. She brushed it off, but I didn’t actually believe her. Something didn’t feel right, but I didn’t want to push.”

“Why didn’t you come say something to Daddy?”

“I didn’t know exactly what was going on. I saw another come across her phone before she turned it off and hid it away. I didn’t know what to do Daddy. I’m sorry.”

“You always come to me, Little girl. You know that you can tell me anything and when this is all over we will be having a long discussion over my knee about you keeping things a secret. ”

Miles heard Rae sigh dramatically and he had to hold back the chuckle that tried to escape.

Even at the face of a spanking the Little brat still had the dramatics turned up to ten.

“Thank you for telling us this now, Little Minx, but you should have said something sooner. Maybe there was something that could have been done.”

“I’m sorry, Uncle M.” Rae sniffed at him.

Ignoring the growl that Emmett let out, Miles pressed a quick kiss on her cheek. “All is forgiven, sweet girl. Don’t worry, we will find your best friend.”

“And your Little girl.”

“Yes Rae, we are going to find my Little girl and bring her home.”

Just as Emmett was returning from putting Rae down to sleep Miles' phone began to ring on the table. Glancing down he noticed it was Beau calling and quickly put it on speaker.

“Hey man. Sorry to call so late, but I just heard your voicemail.”

“No worries. I’m just hoping you can help me.”

“Tell me from the beginning everything you know and then we can go from there.”

So the guys settled in and poured out everything to Beau about all the things they knew about Olivia. They left nothing out in hopes that it would make finding her easier.

“Alright, give me a few days and I’ll get back to you.

In the meantime, just settle in and try to keep life moving as normally as possible.

I know that will be hard, but you have to.

I’ll also put out a call to my contact at the police department and see if there was anything found at her apartment. I’ll be in touch.”

Saying bye, Miles sat back and let out a whoosh of air. He hoped that if anyone could help him find his Little girl it would be Beau.

Knowing that there is nothing Miles could do, he told Emmett goodbye and headed out the door towards home.

He hoped that it wouldn't take Beau very long to find information and that his contact at the police department would be able to help.

Miles didn’t know how long he would be able to survive without information about what was going on with his Little girl.

Letting himself inside of his house. Miles made his way and let Diesel out the back door.

If anyone was taking this harder than him it would be Diesel. Over the last two weeks Olivia had been gone, Diesel had been moping around the house looking for her.

Knowing there was nothing else that he could do for the night, Miles went and took a shower hoping to wash away the feelings of today. Once done, he let his dog in the house, giving him a pet before heading to bed.

It had almost been a week since he got the call from Beau and Miles was starting to get real antsy. He kept wracking his brain as to what could be taking so long.

His heart raced when his phone started ringing on his desk. Glancing down he quickly grabbed it when he saw it was Beau.

“Hey man. It’s nice to finally hear from you. Did you find anything? ”

“Yeah, it took a little bit longer to pull the information that you needed because before Olivia moved to Ivory Mountain, she never existed.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that Olivia Carter never existed.”

“So who is she then?”

“After weeding through dead ends, I finally found the loose string I needed. Her name is Cassidy Taylor.”

Miles couldn’t believe it. Why would she have lied about her identity? That just didn’t seem like something Liv would do without good reason.

“Okay, just give me a run down.”

“Cassidy Taylor - Born in Plainsville, Tennessee she grew up with her mom after her parents got a divorce when she was seven. Straight A student through high school and college. During college she met a guy by the name of David Taylor, who is now a police captain in their local department and they got married in two thousand twenty-two. From there it was a lot of ER visits and unexplained bruises and broken bones. The last week Cassidy Taylor existed, she ended up being admitted for emergency surgery following what the hospital reports as a car accident. After that night, she ran and Olivia Carter was born.”

Miles’ mind was racing with all this new information. How could anyone as sweet as his Little girl have been through the trauma that she had been.

“A few weeks ago Olivia started receiving texts and phone calls from an unknown number. I traced it back to an unlisted number, but was able to run the information on it and see who purchased it. David has been stalking your Little girl for weeks, taunting her about how he was coming for her.”

He felt like a failure for not seeing the signs. All the scared faces, frozen looks in her eyes, and the jumpiness that she always seemed to have. It all made sense now.

“So where is she now? I’m guessing that the stupid son of a bitch has my Little girl.”

“I was able to track their movements before I lost them somewhere in Kansas. My guess is he is headed back to Tennessee where he rules the kingdom and no one questions him.”

There was a beep in his ear cutting of Beau’s next words.

Unknown: *Image attached*

Unknown: She’s mine and no one will take her from me again.

Miles let out a startled cry at the image that was displayed on his phone. There was his Little girl lying on a dirty bed in what looked like a basement. What little bit of skin he could see was covered in bruises.

“Beau, I need you to track the number that just texted my phone and do it NOW!”

Miles heard the clicking of keys as Beau’s fingers flew over the keyboard.

“Got him! The idiot used his work phone to text you. My guess is he thinks he is invincible.”

“Send me the information, I’m going after my girl.”

“Miles you can’t do this alone. It’s too dangerous!”

“I DON’T CARE THAT IT’S DANGEROUS! THE MORE TIME SHE SUFFERS AT THE HAND OF THAT MAN THE LESS OF A CHANCE I HAVE OF brINGING HER HOME TO ME!”

“I get it man. I do. Let me put my team together. We will bring your Little girl back home.”

“Fine, but I’m coming with you. ”

“Okay, meet me at the airport in the next town over. We leave in an hour.”

Miles hung up the phone and sprung up into action, there was no time to waste. Running out the office he sent out a text to Emmett about there being an emergency.

He barely had time to go home before he had to meet Beau at the airport. It was time to bring his Little girl home.
