Story: Reluctantly Rogue
“I’m going to…convince him that I’m serious about the title. That Cara is my number one priority and that I’m committed and giving it my whole heart.”
‘Him’ is obviously the king. That all sounds great to me. “How are you going to do that?”
He finally looks up at me. “It would really help ifyoucould stop being amazing. Maybe you could piss him off. Make my grandfather a little less enamored withyou.”
That surprises me. I smile despite the situation. “Sorry.”
He rolls his eyes but returns the smile. “It’s really too bad we have no interest in one another.”
God, it’s so true. If onlywecould be crazy about each other. But that’s never going to happen. “I know. It’s annoying how much Idon’twant you.”
“Not to mention how much Idowant her.”
I swing toward the sound of my favorite deep voice.
Jonah is crossing the room with long strides.
My stomach flips seeing him. It’s only been a couple of hours, but I feel better simply having his gaze on me.
“How’d it go?” he asks.
“I have six months before my grandfather announces my engagement to Linnea,” Torin tells him.
Jonah stops next to me as his brows slam together. “Excuse me?”
“We’re working on a plan,” I tell him.
Jonah looks at Torin with an eyebrow up. “Work faster.”
The prince chuckles. “It’s been ten minutes.”
“Yeah. Exactly. That’s about nine and a half minutes longer than I’m comfortable with people contemplating how to announce that my girl is marrying another man.”
My heart flips at that. His hand goes to the back of my neck in a gesture that always makes me feel grounded and tingly at the same time.
“I’m not marrying anyone else,” I say. Then add, “Probably” just because I like to poke at jealous Jonah once in a while.
He gives a low growl, and his hand tightens on my neck. He leans in and says, “Do I need to remind you who you belong to?” softly and gruffly against my ear.
I swallow hard. “Um, yes, please.”
“Good girl,” he says, kissing the top of my head, then straightening.
“Am I interrupting? Would you like me to leave you alone?” Torin asks, watching us with amused interest.
“Actually—” Jonah starts.
“Of course not,” I say over him.
I wouldneverhave sex in Torin’s office.
Yuck.
But I do have a pretty desk in my room at home…
Jonah chuckles and the sound dances down my spine, sending sparks of heat along each of my limbs.
I clear my throat. “We were discussing how Torin is going to show the king that he’s fully committed and going to give Cara his heart,” I tell Jonah.
