Sawyer looks angry. He turns his flashing gaze on me.

I wink and go back to my cooking. You want to make me a player in your game? Oh, I’ll play. I grab a burger off the pan and let it sit for a minute, tossing on the buns to toast.

“Cali, let us explain,” Miles says softly.

“You too, Miles?” Cali hisses.

Silence.

I grab the food and place it in front of her. Her cheeks are red, and her eyes are glassy. Fuck, if it doesn’t shoot straight to my dick.

Tears always get me hard. Goddamn it, dick. We’re only playing with her. We’re not getting involved.

Cali snatches her food up and starts to build her burger. I grab the condiments and veggies from the fridge.

She takes a bite, wrapping her pretty little lips around the burger, and I’m stuck staring. She’s eating the food I made for her. Cali makes a tiny moan, fluttering her eyes.

“This is good.”

I hold back a groan of my own. I love that she’s eating what I made her. It’ll help her get better.

“Cali, you can’t just keep ignoring me,” Sawyer says, and I watch out of the corner of my eye as he marches up to the kitchen island.

“This is good,” Cali says to me again, trying to ignore him, but the fire blazes in her eyes. She’s pissed.

I smirk.

“Cali.” Sawyer grabs her shoulder.

Cali whirls on him and, almost faster than I can track, hits the side of his face with an open palm. The crack sounds loud in the room. Everyone freezes.

“Get. The fuck. Off me.” Cali is shaking.

Sawyer’s eyes are dark. Miles is standing, looking like he doesn’t know if he needs to intervene.

Cali straightens, looking Sawyer right in the eye. The entire house is silent.

“Stop me, Sawyer,” she mocks.

Sawyer is angry. His eyes are dark, but he just stands there.

Cali cocks her hand back like she’s going to hit him again. He doesn’t flinch.

His voice comes out low in warning, “Cali…”

“Make me stop,” she swings her hand towards him, then pauses right before she hits him, cupping his face in a gentle mockery.

Sawyer grips her hand, forcing it to stay on his face. “I won’t hit you, Cali.”

“Do it,” she hisses, trying to yank her hand back. He grips her tighter.

“Hit me, Sawyer!” Cali throws her face in his. “Fucking hit me! You won’t!”

Sawyer clenches his jaw.

“Hit me!” She screams, yanking her hand away.

He lets her.
