He lets his hand off, and I draw in a huge breath, then immediately start panting. He wraps his huge hand around my throat, pinning me to the trailer again. Shadowed eyes look at me from behind the mask, completely void of emotion.
Suddenly, he reaches down, and something soft is yanked through my mouth and tied behind my head. The man’s massive body lets off me for a second, and I’m whirled around.
There! There’s a tiny space between him and the wall. The man snatches my arms, and something cold and metal clamps down on them, tightening painfully.
There’s a chuckle. “If you fight me now, it’ll only turn me on. Although you’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
Suddenly, I’m in the air and over his shoulder. I scream into the cloth in my mouth and kick. There’s a smack and a sudden, fiery pain over my ass. He laughs. “God, hot little ass too. It’s a shame I got my hands on you. We’re going to have so much fun.”
Chapter 7
Miles
Iglare at Sawyer as he attempts to make pancakes. This is the third one he’s bunched into a mangled mess and knocked into the burner.
I snap up from my seat at the island and stalk to him. We returned to Ryder’s home after he got arrested two days ago. This home is our closest home to the jail he’s being held at. The house isn’t huge — just a ranch with a few bedrooms, an office, and a nice basement — but where it lacks size, it makes up in quality. The countertops and island are all marble, and the appliances are copper. Ryder put a lot of care into designing this kitchen, and he’ll kill us if we burn it down.
“Not like that.” I try to grab the spatula from Sawyer. “You have to be patient. It’s not ready to flip yet.”
Sawyer throws me a cheeky grin. He’s thrown on a red and white frilly apron, probably because he knows it annoys me.
Sawyer smacks my outstretched hand with the spatula. “Back off. I know how to do it.”
I cross my arms and lean against the island. Sawyer has been acting off all week. He was gone all night last night and returned at the asscrack of dawn. And now, he’s damn near cheerful.
I frown. “What the hell is up with you?”
Sawyer grins, and it’s the kind of smile he usually gives our marks, not us. It makes my hackles rise.
“Sawyer,” I growl.
He’s in my face in an instant. He presses his forehead to mine, his breath puffing against my face. “What was that tone, pet?”
I glare into his blue eyes. They’re hard and calculating. He watches me for a second, his pupils dilating as I glare back at him. I hold his challenge longer than normal.
Sawyer finally pulls back with a cheeky smile and says, “I chose a mark.”
My eyebrows shoot up. “Oh yeah?” Of all the things, this wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. “Why didn’t you say?”
Sawyer smirks. “I like the suspense.”
I should have known he had something up his sleeve. “Don’t you think it’s a bad time for all this? Ryder can’t join us.”
“Sure he can. His bond hearing is at the end of the week. He’ll get out. It’s a weak case.”
Guilt fills me. Ryder is in there because of me. I had bad luck on a hunt, and someone called the body in before it had time to decompose enough. They got a bit of Ryder’s DNA off of him.
I wince. He took the fall for me, as any of us would do for each other. I still hate it. I haven’t been right since, and I could use a distraction.
“So…” I pull out a stool and sit at the kitchen island. “Who is he?”
“It’s the person who called Ryder in.”
“Oh yeah?” I sit forward, a thrill running through me. Some good payback would be healing.
“Yep. The game’s already started.” Sawyer walks back to the stove. “You’ll get to chase.”
A grin creeps up my face. Sawyer knows I love to hunt. I throw a chase into every hunt I lead.
