Page 126 of Wanna Play A Game?
I slam the door and almost trip over what I brought outside the door. Miles is just coming out of Ryder’s room.
“Jesus, who pissed in your cereal?” He glances at the box on the floor. “What’s that?”
Betrayal swirls in my chest. But I shouldn’t feel like that. It’s my fault for letting myself feel something when I knew I shouldn’t.
“Her cat,” I snarl and yank my door open.
“What?” Miles sounds confused. “What’s wrong, Sawyer?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” I slam my door.
It bursts open a second later, and Miles steps inside. “Yeah, you can fuck off with that moody shit. Just talk to me. Did something happen?”
I drop on my bed. “I’m reading, can’t you tell?”
“Must be very interesting air.” He crosses his arms and leans against my dresser.
I snatch the book off my dresser and open it just for show, but I can’t focus on any of the words. Oh my god. She saw her ex-boyfriend and decided she didn’t want us.
I surge up. “Is that fucker still alive?”
“Who? Ben?”
Bugs are crawling under the skin on my arm. I try to shove past Miles. He reaches out a muscled arm and shoves me back hard enough I have to catch my breath. “Fucking talk to me, Cyrus.”
I blink, focusing for a second. Miles looks concerned.
I can hardly say the words. They hurt to grit out. “Cali wants to leave.”
Miles’s gaze flicks across my face. He takes a second to respond, and when he does, the words are slow and careful. “Well, yeah. This isn’t her home. She doesn’t even have any clothes here, Sawyer.”
“I brought her cat.” I run a hand through my hair, laughing in disbelief.
Miles looks surprised for a second. “And she got mad?”
“She doesn’t know.” I grit my jaw.
“Jesus, dude.” Miles blows out a breath.
“She saw her ex, and now she wants to leave.”
Anger flashes on Miles’ face.
“Get out of my way.” I go to push past him.
He hesitates for a second, then lets me. “Don’t kill him, Sawyer. His death is mine.”
“I won’t,” I snarl. “But he’ll beg me to.”
Chapter 62
Miles
Worry floods me. Sawyer is unpredictable on a good day, but he’s started getting better with Cali around. So what the hell set him off again?
I step back out into the hall. Loud meowing comes from a cardboard box.
Well, shit. He actually brought her cat? Sawyer isn’t good at doing things for other people. Never has been. So, seeing him do this? A short burst of admiration fills me.
