Their footsteps got closer and closer. “Walk, you filthy wench,” one of the frog-like demons croaked loudly, then a strangled sob came from the poor girl as she got hit in the back of the head.

We stood perfectly still as the three of them made their way through. Beretta, now in Lycan form, growled low and deep. As the monsters turned towards the sound, she leaped out. Sinking her teeth into its neck, ripping out his throat before he knew she was there. I hurried and lunged for the other, struggling since I didn’t have the element of surprise, but still managing to land a deadly blow to his head. Cecilia shifted and took Ela’s cousin in her arms, pulling her to the side and out of view from the horde outside the doors.

It was too late. The entire army had seen what had just happened, and we could hear their advancing. Their roars and bellows for revenge for the two we just killed were thunderous and deafening.

We braced ourselves, preparing for the attack. I was praying to the goddess and any other deities that may be listening to spare us an easy and swift death if we can’t make it out of this alive. I couldn’t allow Cecilia to go back to the life she had before and I didn’t know how to save her from that. I didn’t know how I was going to save any of them.

I could feel the pounding of hundreds of footfalls closing in, making the ground shake. Right as I was about to move to barricade the doors, the woman from the cell, the dark-haired one who had been covered in black soot and char, came sprinting from the stairs. The sound that escaped her was the most menacing sound I had ever heard. A deep, powerful, heavy roar, and her body seemed consumed in flames.

I moved to the side just as she passed, her blazing eyes furious and her face contorted with rage. Then, she burst into flames. Her body was changing inside the growing inferno until the massive body of a dragon appeared. Her black scales and red eyes sent me into a shock. I suspected, but seeing her true form with my own eyes left me stunned.

The monsters outside screamed. When we all gathered by the door to see what had happened, all the demons, dark fae, and other dark creatures closest to the doors were engulfed in flames. They were wailing in pain, flopping on the ground or struggling to run with their bodies ablaze.

The heat was insane. My Lycan felt as if his fur was singed and his skin blistered just standing this far from the burning bodies. Dragon fire. Nothing burns hotter, except maybe the flames in hell, where I’m sure all these demons will be soon.

The dragon flew overhead, blazing flames expelling from her mouth. She was sweeping the retreating ranks, burning every last one of them alive. The screams and the burning demon stench were too much for many of the girls. Some fainted, while a couple stood off to the side and threw up.

My beast could not take the flames any longer, or the smell. He receded, giving me my form. Many of the other Lycans must have felt the same, because only a few remained in their shifted forms.

Cecilia coughed from the putrid smoke drifting our way. I tucked her into my side, shielding her from the worst of it. Beretta took Ceclia in her arms. The girl had passed out from fright.

“Holy hell fire,” Beretta said, coming to stand beside me. “A dragon. I thought there were no more female dragons left.”

“There aren’t supposed to be,” Irrita said. “The dragon wars depleted their race almost to extinction. The females of the race were long gone before that. That was why the wars began.”

The rumors were that the dragons, desperate to breed, were taking females from the fae races, like the elves and fairies. Females with the magic to conceive a dragon heir. That is what Irrita means. The wars began as clans and kingdoms defended their women from being kidnapped and enslaved for breeding. She would know that history better than a Lycan. We had our own wars to deal with.

The dragon girl circled the ground several times, examining her work as the demons and creatures fell and burned to death. She left no survivors. A single dragon took out the entire dark army. If we had not freed her, we would be the ones lying dead on the ground right now instead.

Seeming satisfied with her work, she lifted her heavy scaled body higher in the air and flew out of sight, leaving us to watch over the last of the dying.

“Here,” Beretta suddenly thrust Angelina into my arms. “Hold her. I’ll be right back.”

“Where are you going?” I asked, adjusting the limp woman in my grip as I almost dropped her from surprise.

“To save Ela,” she yelled. “I know you might not be able to. The stubborn bitch probably commanded you. I saw that fancy new mate mark on her neck. She can not command me, though, and I will not let her suffer for my sake. The prudey princess doesn’t know me very well if she thinks I’m letting her ass do that shit.”

Beretta was pissed, and there was no stopping her.

I’m glad. I’m glad my Luna has a friend as unyielding as she is, especially when I’m stuck here unable to help.

Then, I saw a figure soar into the air, lifting off swiftly from the top of the building where Ela had disappeared and where Beretta just ran. When I realized who it was, I readied myself for another fight.

The building we entered looked much nicer on the inside than it did on the outside, but it was still dark and decrepit. There was a giant hole at the top of the ceiling, right at the building’s center. The only light in the place was coming in from there. It didn’t have the heavy stench of demons and the dust of the replenished earth outside. It had the feel of a mausoleum, and from the moment he closed the doors behind us, I felt like I was in just that. My tomb. If I failed, I am sure I would die.

My father’s magic was waning inside of me. I don’t have much more of it to use. I need to take care of what I came here to do quickly before I’m left with nothing.

“I could kill him,”Val challenged.

“Maybe, but death would be the consequence if you didn’t, and Killian would live the rest of his life without his mate.”

That sobered her confidence. She receded to watch, helping to maintain the magic at the level it was currently at.

We just need to touch him. Just one touch and we can do to him what we did to ourselves to end our first life.
