Rob said one last thing to the girl, then tapped the table, and then walked back over to us. “I don’t think this was the best place to come to ask about parties.”

“And why is that?” Mason asked. “Because the hottest girl here wouldn’t give you the time of day?”

“Is she the hottest girl here? I doubt it. But she did talk to me. And like I said, this isn’t the right place to ask about parties.”

“She didn’t know of any?” Matt asked.

Rob sighed. “No, she did. But she said the Gryphon Club throws the best parties.”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you all night,” Mason said.

“Shhh!” someone hissed.

Mason shook his head. “Come on,” he whispered. “Let’s head back.”

“Look, I admit that I was wrong,” Rob said.

“Apology accepted,” Mason said. “So let’s go back to the Gryphon Club.”

“I’m not talking about your off-campus frat orgy place. I’m saying I was wrong about coming into this library in the first place. Clearly these girls aren’t that kinky. We need to find…” He snapped his fingers. “Wait. We gotta go to a floor that’s more deserted.”

I shook my head. “Rob…”

“We need to find the kinky library sluts who daydream of being pushed up against the deserted library stacks. I bet there’s at least one girl upstairs waiting for exactly that to happen.”

“That’s a great idea,” Matt said. He took a swig of tequila from a brown paper bag.

Had he had that the whole time? What the fuck? We were going to get arrested. I grabbed the bottle from him, but when I turned my back, Rob sprinted off. Matt ran after him. Luckily he didn’t fall down the stairs or anything, because the bottle was already half empty.

Mason sighed. “I forgot what it was like hanging out with children.”

I laughed.

“But when in Rome…” He grabbed the bottle from me and took a sip. He handed it back to me.

I was surprised he’d had a drink. But yeah…when in Rome, I guess. “Cheers, man,” I said and took a sip too.

“Shh!” another person hissed.

“Want to just wait outside?” I asked.

Mason nodded. The two of us walked back outside. Mason sat down on the steps. “Is it weird that I’m a little proud?”

“Of who? Those two idiots?”

He laughed. “Yeah. You have to admit that the library was a good choice to ask about parties. As long as you ask the right girl. Which Rob did.”

“True. And even though he didn’t like her response, the pivot to finding a kinkier girl in the stacks? Pretty brilliant.”

“We taught them well.”

I smiled. “Too bad they forgot that we were the ones that taught them everything they know.” I looked down at my watch.

Our party started in half an hour. It was fine if we were late, but if we missed the whole thing, Rob and Matt would always regret it.

Usually we’d save tonight’s theme for much later in the semester.

But we’d convinced our Gryphon Club brothers to move up the theme for tonight.

Just for Rob and Matt. And they were too busy flirting in the library.

“They’ll remember we know what we’re talking about soon.”

I took another sip of tequila as Rob and Matt burst out of the library doors.

“We’ve got it,” Rob said.

“Don’t rope me into this shit,” Matt said. “The girl I asked said the Gryphon Club too. I think we should just head back.”

Mason smiled and nodded at me.

“No, no, no,” Rob said. “I met the most beautiful artist. There’s a soiree starting in like 20 minutes. She’s going to be painting for a bit or something and then we can hang out.”

“Um…what?” I said.

“It’s going to be a blast. I mean a soiree sounds fancy as fuck.”

“Hmm.” Matt stared at him. “Now that you’re describing it better, a soiree does sound kind of fancy. And that artist did have amazing tits. Maybe we could just stop by.” He pulled a blunt out of his pocket and lit it. He took one puff and handed it to Rob.

“Oh, they’re high,” Mason said. “That explains it.”

And a little drunk probably. That all definitely explained it. “Honestly, I feel a little high too,” I said with a laugh.

“Because of the brownies,” Rob said.

“What?”

“There was pot in the brownies.”

“Are you serious?” Mason said. “I told you that I’m not doing that shit right now. What the fuck?”

“In my defense, you told us after you’d already had a brownie. And then I didn’t know what to say.”

“You let me eat another one!”

“And for that I am sorry.” Rob laughed. “Sorry,” he said more firmly. And then he laughed again. “Fuck, I can’t stop laughing, sorry.”

I started laughing too.

“Fuck this.” Mason stood up and grabbed the blunt from Rob. He took a long inhale, letting the smoke out through his nose. “Here’s the plan,” Mason said. “We’re going to go to the Gryphon Club first and then do your thing.”

And by that he meant we’d never do the weird watching someone paint thing, because they’d have a blast at our party.

“We should get going,” Rob said. “I want to get my art on.”

“Get your what on? What the fuck are you even talking about?” Mason laughed. “And what the hell is in this thing?” He coughed. “That shit is strong.” But instead of handing it back, he took another hit.

“Exactly,” Rob said.

I started laughing. “Exactly what? What is even happening right now?”

“Weekend!” Matt yelled.

I laughed even harder. I couldn’t remember how many brownies I’d eaten. But I knew half the plate had been empty before Rob and Matt had even offered us any. They were high as fuck right now.

“Weekend!” Rob yelled too and then he howled.

“Fuck,” Mason said. “Whenever he howls we’re totally screwed.”

Matt howled next to Rob.

“Shh!” someone said as they walked by us, even though we were only on the steps of the library instead of inside.

I couldn’t stop laughing. I leaned back on the steps, trying to catch my breath.

Rob plopped down next to me and grabbed the tequila bottle. Matt sat down next to him. And Mason sat down on the other side of me and handed me the blunt.

“So why are we trusting this hot artist sending us to a strange soiree?” Mason asked.

“Because…tits,” Rob said.

“To tits.” Matt lifted the tequila bottle in the air.

I laughed. “To tits!” I yelled.

Mason started laughing as hard as me.

It felt like the four of us on the steps outside of Empire High all over again. Only tonight was going to be a million times better. It was only just getting started. And I could only remember good things happening whenever all four of us were high…
