Page 46 of Anything Goes
A smile spread across his face. “Are you for real?”
“Yeah, that’s why I’m asking.”
“Living with you would be dope. What did Mama say?”
“That’s the thing, I haven’t talked to her about it yet. It’s just something that I’ve been thinking about.”
“Oh okay. Well, good luck with convincing her to let me stay with you. You know how she is.”
“Yeah, I know. But hopefully, she’ll see things from a different perspective. Does she know that you and Reggie aren’t really getting along since he moved in?”
“I mean, I think she's starting to sense the tension, but at this point, I'm just keeping my distance. I don't want to cause any problems. But some of the stuff that he does when she's not there, man, it's crazy.”
“What you mean?”
Shaking his head, he said, “Nothing.”
“Nah, tell me what’s going on.”
“I don’t think I should. I could be wrong.”
“But if you’re right, shit will get handled, so tell me,” I replied in a firm tone.
Taking a deep breath, he lowered his gaze. “The other night, while Mama was at work, I could have sworn I heard Reggie on the phone with another woman. It was late, and I was on my way to the bathroom. He was in the living room sprawled out on the couch. I could have sworn he had his dick out, but I was too tired to really focus in and remember. Not to mention, I’m not trying to get caught up in thinking about another man’s dick.”
I tried not to laugh, given the seriousness of the situation, but it was definitely a struggle. “Wow, so his ass is on the bullshit for real, huh?”
“Like I said, I was half asleep, so I could’ve been tripping.”
“I doubt that. Reggie is grimy, so what you saw probably wasn’t a figment of your imagination.”
“Yeah, well, unless there’s some for sure evidence, I can’t tell Mama.”
“I know. Don’t worry, Reggie’s bound to mess up again. It’s in his DNA.”
“Well, I hope it happens before this wedding. Mama deserves so much better.”
“She definitely does.”
“Aye, Coach Montgomery,” Broderick interrupted. “Can we practice our handoffs? You know your nephew gets butterfingers sometimes.”
Keyon laughed. “Oh, so you got big jokes today, huh?”
“No jokes, just the truth.”
Amused, I shook my head. “Y’all go ahead. I need to go holler at Coach Jeffers for a minute.”
“Okay,” Keyon replied. “Oh, did y’all work that thing out?”
“Work what out?”
“Come on now, let's not play dumb.”
Realizing that he was referring to my personal relationship with Alauni I said, “Boy, mind your business.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
Before I could respond, he’d already taken off across the field.
