Page 102 of Anything Goes
“My bad, I couldn’t resist.”
“Yeah, well, you better hope that I resist from beating your ass in a minute. Go get cleaned up.” Laughing, he hurried down the hall and into the bathroom. “I swear I’m going to hurt that kid,” she said.
“Yeah right. You’re going to be so miserable when he’s gone.”
“I know.” Pouting, she dropped into the chair across from me. “You know, if you go ahead and have a kid, I’ll have someone to give all of my attention to.”
I almost choked. “Say what?”
“You heard me. When are you going to get one of these little chicks knocked up? Time is ticking.”
“First of all, I’m not interested in just knocking up some random female. Second, I know what you’re doing, and it’s not going to work.”
“What are you talking about.”
“I don’t care what Maxine told you, her and I weren’t together like that. Oh, and I don’t appreciate you not telling me the shit that she told you. We’re supposed to be family.”
“Well, you weren’t exactly talking to me all that much, so…”
“Whatever, that was some shit that I needed to know.”
“Oh, relax, I didn’t believe anything that she said.”
Eyeing her, I said, “Shit, you sure could have fooled me. I haven’t forgotten about you throwing that little jab out there about the alleged reason I really quit my job.”
“Okay, so, maybe I was trying to be a little difficult at one point.”
“A little?”
“Look, the point is, when are you going to settle down? I want a niece or nephew.”
“Sorry, I don’t have an answer for you.”
“I don’t see why not,” Keyon said, returning from the bathroom. “You and Coach Jeffers look like you’re going to pop out a baby any day now.”
“Wait, what?”
“Don’t mind him,” I told Tokyo. “You know your son likes to talk crazy.”
“I’m not talking crazy. I mean, things seemed a little off between the two of you today, but I’m pretty sure wedding bells and babies are in the future.”
My eyes widened. “Man, you’re tripping. But, wait, was it that obvious?”
“What?”
“That things were off between us?”
Nodding, he filled his plate with spaghetti. “Hell yeah.”
“Language!” Tokyo shot back.
“My bad…yeah, it was obvious. What’s going on with you two? Did y’all get into an argument or something?”
I opened my mouth to respond, then I remembered who I was talking to. Waving him off, I said, “Eat your food.”
“So, itwasan argument?” he replied, pleased with himself for cracking some imaginary code. “Whose fault was it? Probably yours, huh?”
“Of course,” Tokyo chimed in.
