“Seriously? Is this what we’re doing now?”
Keyon shrugged. “Look, no matter how we slice it, it’s always the man’s fault. Even I know that.”
“Nah, man, that’s not true.”
I couldn’t allow him to believe that. Not even for a second.
“Okay, then what happened?” he asked.
“I’m not telling you. Just know that things are complicated at the moment and—”
“Are you guys still together?”
“Keyon?”
“What, Unc? I’m just asking a question.”
Slamming her elbows on the table, Tokyo looked me up and down. “I want to know the answer too.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yep, so answer the question, little brother. Are you two still together?”
Dropping my fork, I said, “No, we’re not. Now, can we talk about something else? I’m sick of everyone wanting to have this damn conversation. Every time I think I’ve gotten away from it, the shit comes back up again.”
“Damn, you’re really in your feelings, huh?” Tokyo grinned.
“That's because he's in love with Coach Jeffers. That's how lovesick people act. Especially when they know they screwed up. Isn't that right Unc?”
I wanted to smack the shit out of Keyon.
He was meddling, and he was doing it just to get under my skin.
Ten seconds away from snatching him up, I took a deep breath and said, “Are you done?”
“I don’t know. That depends on if I’ve gotten through to you or not.”
Tokyo laughed. “Leave your uncle alone. I don’t want to have to pull his hands from around your neck. You know how he gets when someone strikes a nerve.”
I gave her an irritated glance. “At the end of the day, no we’re not together, and no it was not my fault. Well, not exactly. I mean, I was the one that ended things, but I wasn’t the cause for having to do so.”
“Okay, well, what was?” Tokyo asked.
“She handled something in a way that I didn’t agree with, and I’m not sure if that’s ever going to change.”
“What does it have to do with?”
“It involves her daughter’s father. That’s all that I’m saying.”
Completely ignoring the last part of my statement, Tokyo asked, “Did she sleep with him?”
“No, it’s not anything like that.”
“Oh, well, did you allow her to handle things differently?” Keyon questioned.
“No, but—”
“Boy, you better fix the situation,” Tokyo spat, forking through her spaghetti. “I don’t even know the full story and I can tell that you cut things short too soon.”
