“And you were such a charming host, weren’t you?” Ken teased.
It made sense. Nathan had surely been trying to sneak in some kind of interview. He’d just had bad luck, not realizing the event manager was not the person for that particular job.
“Anyway,” Shane cleared his throat, “gotta go. Raffles to oversee and all that.”
“Sure.”
Ken sighed. Someone had to shake the guy, make him see that all work and no play made Jack a dull boy. It wasn’t going to be Ken, but someone.
Besides, even if there was an appeal in getting people out of their shells, Ken had his hands full with Nathan.
The boy he had to find among the throngs of bodies to keep hydrated.
Taking care of brats was a full time job.

Ken downed a glass of water. He’d just left Nathan in his suite and couldn’t get the boy’s languid state out of his mind. It was on him. The pup had just looked so delectable in the morning after an entire day of walking through booths and talking to everyone. He’d even joined his first puppy pile and his eyes had sparkled so brightly Ken regretted not taking pictures.
The point was, Ken couldn’t be blamed if he had to ravish him a bit before leaving the bed. Nathan made such sweet sounds in the morning, too. Apparently, he forgot quite quickly about being grumpy if the offer of a good rimming was on the table.
Ken couldn’t resist offering—and taking it—drinking in all of Nathan’s sounds while keeping his hips still, only to let him hump the mattress after like a good pup.
The boy had behaved, too, barely complaining about the humiliation of it.
He definitely hadn’t complained about all the soft kisses Ken had peppered him with before extracting himself off the bed.
A quick drive home to feed Plum and give her some attention before she wreaked havoc around the place, and he was back at the resort, helping out Ash, Shane, and the other volunteers set up everything for the pet adoption and Best in Show contest.
He hadn’t counted on the amount of work it would actually be to carry dozens of extra large fluffy beds for the pups and kittens. Ken would have to remember not to tease Ash about it next time the boy mentioned something about it. At least he wasn’t on hay duty for the ponies that would be making it downstairs in a couple of hours.
“There you are!”
Ken turned around, recognizing the voice right away. He just had to wonder what Nathan was doing screaming from across the hall.
“No pets allowed here while we’re setting up,” Shane practically growled.
“Easy,” Ken soothed. “I’ll go see what’s up.”
He truly didn’t know but, when Nathan threw himself at him and started sniffing his neck almost frantically, Ken didn’t quite care about Shane’s protests to get him farther away from the door.
He did, but his focus was on his boy’s distressed signal.
“You did so good coming to find me, brat,” Ken praised and teased at the same time, a part of him knowing intrinsically the boy needed the lightheartedness. “Want to tell me what has you upset?”
“I’m not upset, Daddy,” Nathan half-growled, half-mumbled into Ken’s shirt. “Ash texted me the lineup for the contest.”
“I didn’t know you’d exchanged numbers.”
“We did.” The boy pulled back as he nodded, eyes squinting. “You signed me up for it.”
“I did.”
Ken didn’t think he needed to apologize for it. Nathan didn’t look angry about it, for one. Perhaps perplexed was a better descriptor.
“When?”
“Before you arrived, after you shared what happened when you tried to play with other Doms.”
