He’d just been distracted by a pup he remembered seeing at the club the year before and his custom hood when he reached the looming door.
Lee really looked the part of resort owner who didn’t let anything run past him, his platinum hair and blue eyes only adding to that stance of control, of power he had over you.
Too bad Ken had known him as long as he had, seen him fucked up too many times to be intimidated by the Dom vibes emanating from him.
“Come in,” Lee’s voice called out after Ken had rapped his knuckles against the door.
The office hadn’t changed much—except for a couple new pictures of Lee and Ash together.
Lee sat by his desk, Ash leaning against the mahogany piece of furniture.
Shane—who he assumed to be Shane, since Ken only knew what Ash had sometimes shared about working for him during the event—stood toward the side, posture stiff.
It didn’t help that the guy seemed to have a naturally stocky body.
“I can wait outside.”
“I was leaving,” Shane rushed in to say.
Ken didn’t detect anxiety in his voice, exactly—but there was a cutting edge to it, something that screamed he wasn’t there to play or waste anyone’s time.
It was… interesting—not what he expected from a hairstylist who took over the role of event manager for the month.
“Shane,” Lee sounded fondly exasperated when he spoke, “meet Ken. I have a feeling you are going to be seeing more of him in the upcoming weeks.”
“Got it.” Shane nodded. Ken wasn’t sure he’d glanced at him for longer than two seconds, but somehow he hadn’t found it offensive. “See you around, then. Ash, come see me after your lunch break.”
“You got it, boss,” Ash hollered.
The other man already had the door closed behind him.
“Please don’t run off my event manager,” Lee whispered in the pup’s direction.
Ken could already see the guy was pumped full of energy today.
“He loves me.” Ash shrugged, running a hand through his already tousled hair. “Anyway, I’m going to grab some nice, greasy food now while you two eat your fancy stuff. I owe Micki some fries anyway.”
“Of course you do.”
“It’s a long story.” Ken doubted a story about how Ash had stolen Micki’s fries could be very long, but his focus shifted back to the present when he noticed the guy’s attention on him. “But you are going to tell me all the things later.”
“Sure.”
He was definitely going to skip over many of the details.
What Ash didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him, though.
With that, and after Ash gave Lee a quick kiss and promised to behave, it was just him and his best friend.
“So,” Lee cleared his throat. It made sense that he’d be the one to break the silence. “How’s it going with that boy of yours? I assume that’s why you wanted to talk.”
“Guilty as charged,” Ken admitted more easily than he would’ve had with other people. “We can talk while we eat. I know you’re going to be stressing over all the things to do.”
“I can make time.” Lee’s semblance of nonchalance didn’t last long, though. “Okay, let’s go. I already told the chef to be waiting for us.”
“Of course you did.”
“Seriously, man,” Lee said as they walked downstairs to the main floor where the restaurant was located. “Have you even been to the club since you came back from Sacramento?”
