Page 91 of The Saviors: Part Two
“Jesus, woman. We want to do it. You worry about yourself.” Chelsea grumbles ‘asshole’ under her breath and crosses her arms over her chest in a huff. “I heard that. Anyway, we’re switching out in eight-hour shifts instead of twelve, so we stay extra alert. Roland and Baxter have been a damn good addition to the team.”
“Do you need more backup?” Les asks. “We can switch out in shifts, so we have all bases covered.”
“Nah, not yet, but if we do, I’ll give you a shout. I’m going to jump off here before Keon and Tyler kill each other. Give me a call later and let me know what happened at the warehouses.” The call disconnects, and Axel looks at the phone with a raised brow.
“Sure thing,” he mutters.
“Do we have any more information regarding Charlie’s properties?” Zane asks.
“There are several more warehouses,” Nolan answers. “But we need a lead on his house or his hideout.”
“Any chance he’s hiding at Amber’s?” Chelsea asks quietly. “From what you guys have said, she fits the description of the brunette that’s been hanging with Charlie.”
I start rubbing circles on her back. “If he is, it won’t be her primary residence because you know where that is. But I say we search it anyway.”
“Good call,” Axel says. “Do you know her work schedule, Cupcake?”
“Not really. She works three twelve-hour shifts, and they change from week to week.”
“Does she even work at the hospital?” Les asks gently.
“I’ve visited her there a few times, so yeah, as long as she’s still there.”
“We can put surveillance on her house,” Ghost replies. “She doesn’t know us, and we can let you know when she’s gone. I’d say we can search it, but we don’t know what it is exactly that we’re looking for.”
“I don’t want to put you guys out any more than I already have…” Axel’s words trail off when Les gives him a look to shut up. “Fine.”
“We’ll head over there tonight,” Nik adds. “You guys have to be able to move on a moment’s notice.”
“We can stay here until you get the call so you know Chelsea is safe.” Les looks at Chelsea with a smile and then glares back at Axel, making me snort a laugh. “No arguments from you either.”
“I wasn’t going to say anything,” Axel replies defensively.
“Bullshit,” Gray snorts. “I could see it building from a mile away. Let us help you, brother. The more people you have at your back, the quicker you can get this shit over with.”
“Okay,” Axel agrees and slides down the wall to sit on the floor. “I don’t know how much longer I can do this.”
“We get it,” Bridget says softly. “The fact that it’s your dad makes it a thousand times worse. Ghost just went through the same thing, and trust me when I say, the bad guys never fucking win.”
“True that,” Gage throws in. “We’ve all gone through our fair share of this bullshit. It will end, and you can be happy with your family.”
Axel’s eyes go to each of us, and I see the determination settle across his face. One way or the other, he’s going to end this. I just don’t know if he’s going to make it out alive in the process.
We go over a few more things, and everyone starts heading out except Les, Ryder, and Zane, who are staying behind just in case we have to take off. The rest of them are taking the guys that they grabbed from the warehouse to Les’ to interrogate. They go upstairs to bed, leaving the rest of us downstairs.
Axel’s idly playing with a strand of Chelsea’s hair when his phone rings. I know by the look on his face that it isn’t going to be good. He swipes to answer, puts it on speakerphone, and lays it on the coffee table. “What?” he barks. I peek at the caller ID and see that it’s an unknown number. Nolan already has his laptop open, ready to start searching.
“You know, I’m going to give it to you. Hitting different places at once was smart, but I’m smarter.”
“Why? You didn’t accomplish shit. I’ve blocked you at every fucking turn.”
Charlie laughs. “You just think you have. The fake safe house was also smart, but you can’t hide from me forever. It’s a shame you haven’t found the leak in your team yet.”
“I don’t have a leak in my goddamn team.”
“Are you sure about that?” Charlie pauses, and I know whatever is about to come out of his mouth isn’t going to be good. “How else would I know the things I do? It’s not public knowledge, Axel. You forget that I’ve played this game way longer than you have.”
“But I’m better at it. I was able to flip almost an entire team against you within a year. The rest of the motherfuckers are dead. What does that say about you?”
