Chapter1
Cole
In our line of work, there’s always a chance one of us could die. We put ourselves in impossible situations but always came out on top until now. Fear for my family is almost suffocating.
“We need to move,” Les says, pacing the living room at Evie’s house. They dragged my ass in here when I almost passed out in the driveway.
“Not without me,” I say for the third time.
“Cole, you almost dropped dead in the driveway,” Evie says gently. “Let them take care of it.”
“This is my family!” I take several calming breaths. “I’m sorry. I need someone to fix my arm, and I’ll be fine. Zane assessed it and said it was just out of place. Someone just needs to pop it back in.”
Dex steps up in front of me. “Stand up.” I get up from the couch and turn around to brace my good arm on the back of it. I can’t tell you how many times one of us has had to do this. “Don’t fucking punch me.” He clasps my bad shoulder in both hands, and I grit my teeth. He moves before I can blink, and the joint snaps back into place.
“Motherfucker,” I grind out and turn around. “Thanks, man.” I swing my arm around, testing it. “What’s the plan? We need to get to Sean.”
“The guys are loading up everything as we speak. Let’s move,” Les says. I follow her from the house and slide into the SUV with Ghost and Caden.
Ghost jerks it into drive and peels out of the driveway. “Holden and Hart are going to stay behind to start searching. The twins are going to stay to protect the kids and girls.”
“Have you been able to reach Gavin?”
Caden turns around in the seat to face me. “No. It goes straight to voicemail, but he has a tracker. Holden will find him.”
“What the fuck happened, Cole?” Ghost asks, looking at me in the rearview mirror. “Why was Gavin with Chelsea?” I tell him everything, and a sick feeling settles in my stomach. If Charlie grabbed Chelsea, Gavin is more than likely dead. I know he has Nolan for sure, Sean might be paralyzed, I have no idea where Kai and Axel are, and we might have gotten one of Sean’s friend’s brothers killed. “Why didn’t any of you say how goddamn bad it is?”
“Like we did?” Caden says.
“Right there!” I yell when I see the tire marks from my Range Rover going over the hill. Ghost slams on the brakes, and I’m out before the car comes to a complete stop, skidding to a stop beside Sean. “Sean.” I rub my fingers across his sweaty forehead. “Open your eyes.”
His eyelids flutter open, and there is so much pain in his blue eyes that I want to lose it. “You came back.”
“Of course I did.”
“Fuck, Sean,” Ghost says hoarsely, squatting beside us. “Caden, call nine-one-one.” Caden walks off with his phone already to his ear. I watch Les walk to the top of the hill and hold her arm out when Ryder, Gage, and Leo start to walk down so they don’t overwhelm Sean.
“I still can’t feel my legs,” Sean whispers, tears rolling down his cheeks. “Cole, I can’t move.”
“We’re getting help,” I tell him gently. “You’re going to be fine.” Ghost and I exchange a look. I have no idea if that’s true or not.
“They’re on their way,” Caden calls out. “Five minutes out.”
“You guys can’t be here,” Sean says.
“I’m not leaving you again.”
“Go find the others. There’s nothing you can do for me.” Sean shuts his eyes, blocking us out.
“Don’t you dare fucking give up on me,” I grit out between clenched teeth.
“You have to save her, Cole. She can’t go back to Brady.”
“We will, but that doesn’t mean I just leave you.”
Sean opens his eyes, and there’s a fire burning in them. “You will just leave me and fucking save her. She’s the most important person in my life. Now get the fuck out of here.”
