Page 113 of The Saviors: Part Two
“He’s not lying,” Micah says. “This place smells like rotting corpses.” Banger gags again, and Caden starts laughing even harder. “We’re going to find the source.”
“You might want to send Banger outside so he doesn’t puke and leave his DNA everywhere,” Nik retorts.
With a laugh and a shake of my head, I go upstairs and start searching through the rooms. I tear up anything that looks like it might be hiding secrets in every room that I walk into. The guys are calling out all clear, and I’m beginning to think we got set the fuck up.
“Fuck,” someone breathes through the comms.
“What is it?” Axel barks.
“The basement is full of bodies. Some of them look fresh,” Evander says. “Jesus Christ. There’s a couple with badges. FBI, and local police.”
“Down here!” Sean yells. “I’m in the room under the stairs!” I take off running, practically jumping down the stairs, and skid to a stop.
“Holy shit,” Axel says, walking into the room. It’s filled with pictures of Les and her guys out as the Black Demon. The damning part of it is pictures taken inside the home with them carrying the people into the basement. Axel relays all this, and Les sighs.
“He had to have gotten them when Jay bugged my house. Victor must have sent them to Charlie as insurance if he couldn’t kill me himself.”
“We can destroy all this,” I assure her. “We aren’t done looking. We still need to find what he has on Micah.”
“I already know,” Nolan says quietly. “Come to the office at the front of the stairs.”
Axel and I go that way while the rest of them are tearing down the pictures of Les. The office looks much the same as the room, but it’s all incriminating pictures of Micah that go back for years. We start tearing them down, and a sick feeling settles in my stomach. I press the button on my comms to turn it off and signal for Nolan and Axel to do the same.
“This isn’t all he has,” I say, trying to explain what I’m feeling. “He’s still toying with us.”
“The bodies at the other house are an awful big sick fucking joke,” Axel replies.
“I think it’s a distraction,” Nolan says. “He knows we can destroy all of this.”
Axel puts his comms back in, and we do the same. “Zane? Do you still have eyes on Charlie?”
“Yeah, he hasn’t left. No one has.”
“Did you make sure that there’s no other way out of there?”
“Yes,” Zane says evenly. “This isn’t my first time doing this.”
“I wasn’t implying that it was,” Axel grits out. Nolan reaches out and squeezes Axel’s arm. “We think this is a distraction. We just don’t know from what.”
“We’re on lockdown here,” Les says. “So, if he’s planning to come after us, he’s in for a surprise.”
“What about Ari’s crew?” Sean asks.
“I called and told him what was going on, so they’re on high alert.” Axel sighs, and I see he’s at a complete loss on what to do, which rarely happens.
“Destroy the bodies and evidence. Go out the opposite way that you came in, just in case he’s waiting to ambush. Take a million different turns before you go back to Les’. We can meet back there to regroup.” I look at Axel, expecting him to be angry that I took the lead, but he looks relieved. He’s had to make so many decisions over the past several weeks that have not only put us at risk but everyone else involved. “We hit the compound tomorrow.”
I’ve never understood how Axel does this day in and day out. He has people looking to him for guidance, and the wrong call can get someone killed.
I just hope I didn’t do that.
Chapter37
Axel
We make it back to Les’ without any issues, but everything we just found is plaguing my mind. Micah and his team assured us that they took care of the bodies and any DNA that might have been left behind. I keep going over everything just to see if I can come up with what the fuck Charlie is up to. Cole’s declaration that we’re hitting the compound tomorrow has my mind going a mile a minute. Is this really almost over? Or is Charlie just going to give us the slip again and follow through with his plans? Also, where the fuck is Amber? Zane says that no one has left the compound since Charlie got back yesterday. My question is, why? There’s a reason for everything that Charlie does, and it’s never good.
“Hey,” Nolan says, walking out onto the patio. “Les said that they fixed up the pool house, so we don’t have to drive back to the cabin.” He sticks his hand out, and I slide mine into his. He jerks me to my feet. “Let’s go to bed.”
