Page 36 of The Saviors: Part Two
“Yeah, but she was also going through the same thing,” Chelsea argues. “She was probably too scared to step in.”
“I still don’t think you should go, Dragonfly.”
“It’s not safe for you guys to go out either.”
“We need answers, Gorgeous. We would feel better about you being here under protection.”
Nolan pulls her under his arm, where she’s sitting beside him on the couch. “I’ll be here with you, Lovie.”
She lays her head on his shoulder and slides her arm around his waist. “I know, but I’ll still be worried about everyone else going out.”
“We’re going straight there and straight back, Ladybug. I’ll even text you myself when we pull in and when we leave.”
“Okay,” she says quietly.
“Let’s head out so we can get back,” Axel says.
Nolan flashes me a look and then kisses the top of her head. “I’ll be back.” We each give her a goodbye kiss, and he follows us out to the garage and shuts the door behind him. “So, I ran what Kai asked me to. Amber checks out. I tracked her all the way back to elementary school, but nothing on her. Roland checks out, too, but Baxter was arrested several years ago for assault and battery. He even did a little bit of jail time for it.”
“Do you have the records?” Axel asks.
“Yeah. He beat the shit out of some guy for beating his girlfriend in front of him. Right after that is when they started the women’s shelter.”
“So he basically checks out,” Sean says. “We would all do the same in his position. We just wouldn’t get caught.”
“He’s kept his nose clean since then.” Nolan shrugs. “I’ll keep digging if you want me to.”
Axel looks at me. “What’s the call, Kai?”
“Me?”
“You have the feeling, and they aren’t usually wrong.”
“They could be now,” I admit. “All that fucked with my head. I don’t trust myself to make that call.”
“You should,” Nolan says. “It might have messed with you, but it made you sharper. None of us considered this before. Charlie is getting his information from somewhere.”
“Any more luck on the past Saviors?”
“Just the guy in prison, Wilkonson, and I’m still trying to track the other one down. They are the only two showing up, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t change their identities.”
Cole leans his arms on the bed of Axel’s truck and looks around at us. “I don’t want to say this, but is there any way Ari and his crew could be involved? They had full access to the house, Chelsea, and the information about Kai and Nolan.”
“Ari was with Charlie before I took over.” Axel rakes his fingers through his hair. “You know what it means if you’re right?”
“We kill them,” Sean answers, deadpan. “I’m not saying that I agree, but I’m not taking any more chances with her safety.”
“Agreed. Nolan, dump their phones. Dig through them as far as you can.” Axel pulls Nolan toward him and kisses him until Nolan is melting against him. “Stay alert, keep your gun near you, and take care of our girl.”
“I will. You’re not upset about what happened earlier?”
Axel shakes his head with a smile. “No. When I said you were a part of this, I meant that. And Chelsea knew she needed you.”
Nolan steps back from Axel, Sean jerks Nolan against him with a grin, and seals his lips over Nolan’s. Nolan gasps in surprise and then groans when Sean kisses him harder. My eyes flash to Axel’s, and he’s just shaking his head. Sean jerks away. “No wonder you got Axel fucked up.”
Nolan touches his lips. “What the hell was that about?”
Sean shrugs and swings his leg over his crotch rocket. “I’ve been dying to know what that felt like.”
