Story: Stars In His Eyes

But even though she felt uncomfortable, she couldn’t unreasonably forbid He Teng from going to the cafeteria and insist he stay with her, so she had no choice but to head to the kitchen alone to see what she could cook up for dinner on the spur of the moment.

However, she was still bustling about in the kitchen when she suddenly heard a knock at the door.

At that moment, He Zhilan thought it was either the political commissar’s wife or Chen Ya’nan, so she responded from inside the house and quickly trotted to open the door.

But, when she opened the door and saw the person standing outside, she was taken aback, "Why is it you?"

The one knocking was Lan Li, dressed in casual clothes, his face mostly expressionless.

"Wow, when did Mr. Lan come back from S Province?" He Zhilan said lightly with a sarcastic glance at Lan Li, knowing that he was here to see He Teng, so she didn’t really leave Lan Li outside, "My brother is showering, come on in and wait for him."

Lan Li grunted his acknowledgment, indeed he was there to see He Teng, so he changed his shoes and entered, casually looking around He Teng and He Zhilan’s house.

He knew that He Teng and He Zhilan had renovated their house when they remarried, so when he walked in, he saw everywhere exuded a sense of freshness and warmth, there were several pots of thriving plants on the windowsill, and even a cactus, which at that moment, had a bud ready to bloom.

After pouring Lan Li a glass of water, fulfilling her duty as the hostess, He Zhilan returned to the kitchen, not bothering to pay him much attention, waited for He Teng to emerge from the bathroom. Upon seeing Lan Li standing in the living room, He Teng was also startled.

"When did you get back?" He Teng asked as he approached, drying his hair.

"Just got into town today; I brought my aunt back to the base, so I decided to drop by," Lan Li said, glancing towards the kitchen, adding, "You were about to go to the cafeteria, right? I’ll wait for you; there’s something I want to talk to you about while we walk."

He Teng responded and quickly finished drying off, changed clothes, and headed to the kitchen, "Zhilan, I’m heading to the cafeteria with Lan Li, make sure you eat, and take care of yourself."

"Oh~" He Zhilan nodded sulkily and gently tugged at He Teng’s sleeve, mumbling, "Isn’t Lan Li in S Province? How come he’s back all of a sudden? Is he back to help Gu En?"

She remembered that Lan Li was indeed very good to his cousin Gu En.

"Old Master Gu passed away, and Lan Li couldn’t make it back in time. He came back to pay his respects," He Teng speculated, "The Gu Family has already severed the adoption ties with Gu En; Lan Li won’t get involved in Gu En’s affairs."

Pausing for a moment, He Teng then added, "Some things, I’ll tell you when I come back later tonight."

It was about Lan Li, which Lan Li had told him before, but he never mentioned to He Zhilan.

"Alright." He Zhilan gave He Teng a sweet smile, then followed him out of the kitchen. After seeing He Teng and Lan Li out the door, she closed it and went back inside.

Watching the interaction between He Teng and He Zhilan, Lan Li felt somewhat surprised; it seemed as though He Teng had changed a lot, and so had He Zhilan.

He Zhilan would pull at He Teng’s hand and act coquettishly, and He Teng, instead of feeling uncomfortable, looked at her indulgently.

Walking with Lan Li in the military compound, to be honest, He Teng felt as if he was in a bygone era.

Once upon a time, he and Lan Li were truly fated comrades-in-arms, also exceptionally in sync with each other on missions, with nearly no need for adjustment.
