REID
“Chips. Chocolate—”
“ Gummies . We are not forgetting these this time.”
I laughed as Tauren grabbed them from the shelf, tossing them in our cart.
“What about those mini cookies you liked?” My finger pointed, making a path as I scanned over the aisle, looking for the bright blue box. “I think… there they are.”
“Good choice.”
She pulled back against my arm as I went to head over, pushing to her toes as she met my lips. What started off light increased as I pulled her into my arms, deepening our kiss.
Squeaking from a cart sounded. The whispers reigned. I eased back far enough to place my forehead against hers. Tauren kissed my lips again, letting me go to glare at the older couple who were staring. She headed over, grabbing the cookies to place in the basket.
“Popcorn. ”
I nodded, throwing her a wink and watching the couple rush away. A deep voice had me turning and smiling at the same time. Just over six feet stood an all-too familiar face. Dark eyes stood out against darker skin, and the smile he wore only made mine grow.
“I thought I saw a familiar truck in the parking lot. Look at me. I’m not late, I’m early for once.”
“Lucus!” Tauren went over, throwing her arms around my best friend before pulling back. I reached forward, shaking his hand.
“You’ve never been early a day in your life. You couldn’t have been this excited about movie night.”
“Are you kidding me? After the last few weeks, I’ve been counting down the days.” He grabbed a bag of pretzels, throwing them in the basket. “How’s the job going at the station?”
I shrugged. “It’s not interrogating people, but I prefer the crime scene side more anyway. It’s going well.”
“You look good. I’m happy for you. For both of you.”
“Speaking of both, where’s Brittany?”
I winced at Tauren’s question, and she threw me a teasing look.
I hadn’t been able to hide my lie after Lucus had shown up only days after I’d used her name.
When he mentioned that they’d just started dating, Tauren’s eyes had shot over to me, full of questions.
And I answered them… honestly. But only after he’d left. And I paid the price… gladly .
“She’s pulling guard. She promises not to miss the next one if she’s able. She’s excited to meet you.
“And I can’t wait to meet her.” Tauren’s arms wrapped around my waist, and I grabbed the cart as all three of us headed more towards the front of the store.
From what started out as apprehension had now turned to happiness. There was no hesitation, no hiding our affection. What Tauren and I shared wasn’t for everyone to understand. We had each other, and our selected friends, and that’s the only thing that mattered.
I could see that now.
She’d once asked what I’d risk to be with her. The answer hadn’t changed, but the love behind it had. I’d risk it all. I’d risk… only everything.
