Page 119 of Ondine: Vol. 2

We are in the hallway and he closes the door to Jake’s childhood bedroom.

“You don’t think Boone won’t come after us? He’s a crazy mother fucker who got his ear torn off by an omega. Our car is out front. Come on, Shadow, don’t make me lose it on you.”

He stops me.

And then laughs.

“Oh, sweet little beta. While I appreciate the hustle, Boone is not coming after us.”

I shake my head. “He won’t stop, Shadow. They never do.”

He puts his hands on my shoulders.

“Take a deep breath while I tell you something. Ok?”

I didn’t think I was breathing wrong, but I do it anyway. I take a deep breath and give him my attention.

“Freddie and I have unusually powerful alpha barks. Freddie could stop his own father in his tracks when he was a kid. By 13, his influence could last hours. It’s what makes him so dangerousas a feral alpha. When he told Boone to sleep he pushed so much into the command, Boone may never wake up.”

“I’m sorry. What?”

“Boone is basically in a coma. And he’ll remain that way until Freddie decides to wake him up.”

“That’s not real.”

Shadow gives me a minute to process.

I’m dumbfounded. A man with that kind of power shouldn’t even exist. He should be…hiding in a monastery in the mountains, meditating all day. Oh my god.

“Is Boone just laying on his basement floor bleeding out?”

“I’d prefer it that way. But no. Jake had Boone’s father call an ambulance before we even got Ondine out.”

And they will patch him up, but not be able to wake him. My god.

“Does it work on betas?”

“Mine doesn’t. His may. That would be surprising.”

“Still, Freddie could do a lot of damage in this world. Especially if he wanted power.”

“If he wanted power.”

My imagination takes over. Freddie could influence any alpha or omega he came across to do anything. He could kill, manipulate, or destroy anyone for anything. He’d always get his way.

“I was actually worried about being in a pack with him.”

“Cause he’s scary?”

Shadow pats me on the arm. Solidarity.

Ondine cries out in pleasure. I look around the house and decide we are safe enough. Especially with Freddie on our side.

“But don’t worry. For whatever reason, his bark doesn’t work on Ondine.”

God.

That’s good.
