Page 17 of Meek: Chasing That Gangsta Love
I sat in the truck watching her until her bus pulled up.
She waved bye right before she got on and just like that, she was gone.
I felt sorry for the girl. I didn’t mind giving her that money cause I knew what it felt like to starve.
I drove back to the house and found that Reesie was still sleep but Kisha, she was up sitting on the bed and looking out the window with her knees pulled all the way up to her chest.
I noticed that she did her hair and let it flow down her back. I was glad to see that she finally did something with herself and actually had the strength to get up. This was progress. She looked over at me and smiled. “Hey Meek.” She used her hand to pat the spot next to her. “Come.”
I walked over and sat down. “How you feeling?” I asked her.
“This morning is the first morning that I actually didn’t vomit.” She said looking at my bare arms. “Where’s your jacket? It’s cold as hell outside.”
“Well, I ran into somebody at the store. A girl named Mya, and she looked like she was having a rough time, so I gave it to her, and I gave her a ride to the bus stop after she told me that she was your friend from the group home.”
“You found Mya?” She dropped her legs letting them dangle from the bed. “Oh my God, how is she? Did you get a number? What do you mean she has it rough?”
“Calm down.” I laughed. “Let her tell you. I gave her the house number since she didn’t have a phone and she’s going to call you in a couple of days.”
“Wow.” She replied. “I can’t wait to talk to her.
You have no idea what that girl’s been through.
See, the system is all fucked up Meek. They take us away from the ‘so called’ fucked up environments and place us with kids who’ve been through the same shit as you or worse.
The only person I clicked with was Mya because everybody else was traumatized just like we were and there was absolutely nothing we could do to help each other.
Like seriously, what the fuck did they want us to do? Compare notes? It was crazy.”
“I understand Kish, but leave that shit in the past or you’ll never move on.” I told her.
“Easier said then done Meek. I personally think I should go see a counselor one day. In eighteen years, I’ve been through way too much.
I’m gonna go to school and get a degree.
I’m gonna be a great motivational speaker one day and share my testimony; watch and see how my story can help so many other girls in my situation.
There’s a lot of me and Mya’s out there. ” She said.
That’s crazy how I was just thinking the same thing on the ride home. I was glad to see the old Kisha coming back around. I couldn’t stop staring at her, I couldn’t believe this was the same girl from a couple of years ago. Shit really did change.
She peeped me looking at her. “What’s wrong Meek? Why you looking at me like that?”
I had to snap out of it and catch myself. My girl was right across the hall sleeping. “Nothing.” I said. “I’m about to make breakfast real quick. Are you gonna try to eat? Don’t make a nigga cook this shit if you gon’ play cause I can make enough for me and Reesie.”
“I’m eating.” She smiled with those sparkling eyes. “Just let me know when it’s done.”
I walked out and went to prepare my meal.
I threw some butter in a skillet and tossed some diced onions in the pan right before seasoning some ground turkey and throwing it in the pan as well.
When the meat browned, I poured the oil off of it and added some scrambled eggs and cheese to the meat mixing it all up.
I made a pot of cheese grits as well with some honey butter biscuits on the side. Yeah, hood shit.
Sitting at the table eating together wasn’t as awkward as I thought it would be, this was the first time all of us had done that shit since Kisha came.
She mostly secluded herself to the room because she never felt well.
She was cursing me out for not giving her, her way and then apologizing for it the next day.
“How you feeling Kisha?” Reesie asked her stuffing her mouth with a spoonful of grits.
“I’m feeling fine today, thanks for asking. I’m just taking it day by day.”
“Well good.” She smiled and looked at me. “You hear that Meek? She’s doing just fine so I hope I don’t hear any excuses tonight baby.”
Kisha wasn’t paying Reesie any mind as she struggled to eat the baby plate I fixed for her.
“We gon’ talk about this in a few Reesie.” I told her not wanting to discuss this shit in front of Kisha.
After breakfast Kisha wanted to get out the house so that’s what I did and tagged Reesie along.
We ended up at the park down the street.
It was pretty outside, and the sun shined down on the city, but it was still cold, she made sure that she dressed warm.
I stood back and let her do her thing and get the time that she needed until it was time to go.
She walked in front of Reesie and I while I held Reesie’s hand and walked behind.
“She seems like she’s real cool Meek.” Reesie said.
“She is, she’s even cooler once you get to know her.”
“Yeah, I can’t wait for her to actually open up so I can find out what all the hype is about.” She chuckled but I knew she was serious. I didn’t blame Reesie for feeling a twitch of jealousy toward Kisha. The girl was beautiful all around.
“Don’t be like that Reesie, I keep telling you that you ain’t got shit to worry about.” I assured her.
She didn’t respond; instead, she took in the view and enjoyed the walk. We ended up hanging out all day but when we got back, Kisha wasn’t feeling well again so I kicked my shoes off and sat next to her with the TV on like I normally did.
“Meek?” She said looking up from the covers. “Remember we used to watch the reruns of ‘Crooklyn’ over and over imagining that we were in Brooklyn? We always said we’d go there one day. Did you ever go?”
I smiled at her and shook my head. “Nah, not without you.” I told her.
She looked back to the TV and continued to watch it. “Can you get me a glass of water please?”
“I’ll be back.” I walked out and went to the kitchen. Reesie was on the couch putting her boots on.
“Why aren’t you dressed?” She asked.
“Where we going?”
“Come on Meek, you said tonight, and I want my damn car. Like how long are you going to hold off?” She asked.
I leaned up against the counter and held the glass in my hand. “It don’t work like that, we haven’t checked this nigga out in months. I can’t go in without a plan Reesie and you know that shit. I gotta do me and check shit out again to make sure it’s safe for us both.”
“It’s safe Meek, damn.” She stood up putting her jacket on.
“What did I say Reesie? Damn, have I ever steered you wrong? People fuck up when they get greedy, you need to chill the fuck out.”
She rolled her eyes. “You know what? Fuck you Meek, ever since you got your friend back you’ve been catering to her every need fucking up our plans.”
“You better watch your mouth, Reesie. That girl never did shit to disrespect you. Calm the fuck down and chill out man. Damn, why you got a nigga arguing and shit? You and I never do this kind of bullshit. What happened to my ride or die?”
“Apparently she’s in the room.” She said putting her gun on her waist.
“You trippin’ baby, just chill, that’s all I’m asking. I can’t leave Kisha right now and you know that. I honestly don’t think she’s strong enough.”
“So, let me get this right? I’m supposed to sit and wait until you feel like playing ‘tag you’re it’?”
“Don’t get slick.” I warned her.
“You know what? Don’t even worry about it; you want me to wait? I’ll wait, I’m about to go outside and get some fresh air.” She walked out.
I stared at her until she was out the door before walking back in the room with Kisha.
“Here you go?” I said passing her the glass only to see that she was sleep.
I sat it down and pulled the covers all the way up over her curvaceous body.
Sitting back in the chair, I just stared at her admiring her beauty and her strength.
I must’ve dozed off in the chair and woke up when the sun was coming up.
Damn, Reesie didn’t even come get me. She must’ve been really mad at a nigga.
I walked out to go find her and make up with her cause honestly we never had an argument before but like people always said, if you wanted to experience real and true love then see how a person would act when it was time to go through the trenches.
I opened the room door and found that it was empty.
“Reesie, where you at ma?” She wasn’t in the bathroom, kitchen, or anywhere else for that matter.
“Where the fuck did this girl go?” I mumbled picking up the phone to call her.
It went straight to voicemail. To say that I was pissed was an understatement.
I was getting ready to check outside when the house phone rung. “Yo.” I answered.
“Morning, is this Meek? This is Mya.” She said all cheery.
“Oh hey, what up Mya? How you been?” I asked her.
“I’ve been good ya know? Hanging in there. Is Kisha up?” She asked.
“Hold on.” I said walking into the room holding the phone in my hand. Kisha was just waking up. “Here, it’s Mya.” I gave her the phone.
She covered her morning breath and snatched the phone. “Damn bitch, can I wake up first?” She laughed. Yep, she was getting back to herself, and I know they were about to catch up like they never left.
I gave them some privacy and closed the door only to walk out to a ringing cell phone. “Yo?” I answered and was greeted with a recording. Miami- Dade Correctional Facility, what the fuck?
“Meek?” Reesie said as soon as I accepted the call. “I’m locked up.”
I didn’t even want to know shit over the phone. I told her ass to stay in the house. I took a deep breath and pinched the tip of my nose to stop from going off. “How much is the bond?” I asked.
She took a long pause before answering me. “I don’t have one.”
“What are your charges?”
“They got me for attempted premeditated murder and attempted robbery with a firearm.” She said.
I felt weak as fuck right now. “In the state of Florida that 10, 20, life shit was real. “When can I come talk to you?”
“I’ll be able to have visits tomorrow, Meek, go on the website to find everything out.”
“You okay?” I asked her. She always sounded strong, so it was hard to tell. Emotion was something she wasn’t good at.
“Just come talk to me tomorrow. I need a lawyer; a good one.”
“I already have one. Don’t worry about that. I’ll be there tomorrow.”
“I know you’re mad, but I love you.” She said.
“I love you too.” I disconnected the call and grabbed my keys off the counter. I turned around to put my jacket on and noticed that Kisha was standing right behind me.
“Is everything okay?” She asked.
“Reesie got locked up. I’m going to see my lawyer now.” I looked her up and down from her pretty face to her pretty toes. “Get dressed, I gotta take you to.”
She shook her head. “Meek, I’m fine trust me. You go ahead, anyway Mya is on her way over and we want to have lunch.” She said. “Go handle your business, you’re going to have to trust me.”
I thought about it, and I guess she was right. “You need money?” I asked her.
“I have money in my purse. Remember you brought it back to me after you killed Kidd.” She said. “Which reminds me, I want to go ahead and claim the money that my daddy had set up for me.”
I didn’t know if that was a good idea. For some reason, I felt like it I allowed her to put all that money in her hands she would find the wrong shit to do with it and let the weakness of coke get to her.
I hated that she even tried that shit the first time cause it was hard to come back from that.
“Kisha, please don’t disappoint me, please. ” I begged.
She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled my body close hugging me. “I promise I won’t.” She said.
In order for me to really know, I had to take her word for it until she showed me otherwise. I took the spare key off my key ring and passed it to her. “Here you go, and be safe out there.”
The amount of butterflies I felt passing her that key was unreal. Like this shit was supposed to be like this, God didn’t bring us back here for nothing but we’d soon find out. I walked out and locked up behind me as I made my way to see what I could do about Reesie. This shit was crazy.
