She tipped her head in a familiar gesture, her hair spilling over her shoulder. “Then I promise to be less cagey. I could probably stand to be a little more open. I’m working on it, but—it’s hard for me.”

Owen reached out and was gratified when her hand found his. “Nora was very open with me,” he said softly.

“Yeah, over the internet, under a fake name. It’s a lot harder when it’s face to face,” she said, lacing their fingers together. Owen tugged her closer and traced her jawline. “And even harder when you do that and make me forget what I was saying,” she muttered.

“We’re both promising to be more honest,” he prompted, lost in her soft grey eyes.

“Oh right, that,” she said, and this time when their lips met there wasn’t any urgency to it, just sweet, leisurely exploration. It felt right, kissing her like this, and the tension in his shoulders melted away. He’d screwed things up with her once—twice, actually—and he wasn’t about to risk doing that again. Ever. “My mom is inside though,” she said eventually. “We should go back. We’re celebrating.”

“Did you get the job at Reproductive Justice?”

“I thought you weren’t involved in that?” Victoria said as he pulled the door open.

“I’ve heard chatter that they were going to offer it to you. I assume they did, since they’d be idiots not to.”

“I accepted their offer today.” It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dim light of the bar, but in the center of the room he saw Kimmy waving at both of them excitedly. He snuck a kiss to Victoria’s cheek and she snuggled into him, his arm automatically going around her back.

“Then that deserves a celebration.”
