“Interned with Andy one summer. It’ll be fun; too bad you can’t make it.”

Victoria made a non-committal noise and they restarted the movie. Cassie’s wedding sat heavily on her mind, because the money excuse suddenly seemed flimsy. It would be more expensive than she usually allowed herself, for sure, but Victoria genuinely liked Cassie, unlike most of her law school classmates. Most of them came from money, although probably not as much money as Owen. But they were the sort of people who were the richest kids in their high schools, and while they quickly accepted Victoria as one of them she kept most of them at arm’s length. Cassie, though, had never made her feel awkward like that. She scrunched her face up in disappointment, feeling suddenly sheepish about how cheap she could be sometimes.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“Eh, just having some second thoughts,” she said with a shrug. “But what’s done is done.”

“So come with me,” he said without looking at her, and her mouth went dry.

“Wait, what? Really?”

“I have a hotel room and a plus one, and Andy’s one of my best friends. I’ll just tell him I’m bringing someone. You wanted to go, and now you can. You can stay with me.”

“Are you—are you sure?”

He glanced at her, a grin playing at the corner of his lips. “I’ve been inside of you. Pretty sure that’s more intimate than staying in a room with two beds. And I can keep my hands to myself so long as you can, if that’s what you’re worried about.” She narrowed her eyes and tossed a throw pillow at him, but he caught it easily. “Do you want to come?”

“I do, yeah.”

“Then it’s a date,” he said, making her stomach flip.
