“Me too,” Kendall replied. “She is doing great at her new firm. She says that the boss there is an older woman who treats her well.”
“I’m glad to hear that,” Erin replied, looking down the hall when Sean headed their way.
“I’m going to let Sean know, but I’ll make sure he doesn’t do anything. Don’t tell Donaldson, okay?” Erin asked.
“I won’t, but I’m going to move David and Kristen to the empty end of the table, okay?”
Erin grabbed Kendall’s hand, letting it go with a squeeze. “Thank you.”
Sean watched David return to his seat with an odd look at him.
He swiveled in his chair and looked down the hall. Kendall and Erin stood by the bathroom in conversation.
That’s a little odd.
Sean stood, tucking the chair underneath the table before making his way down the hall to Erin, watching her say something to Kendall before Kendall walked toward him.
“Kendall.”
“Sean.”
Kendall disappeared around the corner, and he made his way over to Erin, slipping his hands into his pockets.
Halting next to the bathroom door, he asked, “Are you all right?”
“I am,” she said. She took his hand and guided him away from the bathroom when an older woman asked to go inside.
“Excuse us,” Erin said, dragging him near the front door.
“David knows it’s me,” Erin said, halting next to the door.
“He does?” Sean asked, concern welling up.
“Don’t worry. I’ve taken care of it,” she said, a smile creeping onto her lips.
“You did?” he asked. “I’m impressed. David isn’t an easy man to deal with.”
“I was nervous, but he wouldn’t get the best of me. I know too much,” she replied with a wink.
He stared at her, a jumble of emotions rolling around inside him.
“You keep amazing me,” he said, a flush blooming across her face.
“What do you mean?” she asked, patting her hair.
“I mean…” he said, tucking a loose curl behind her ear. “There’s a lot more to you than I first realized. And I’m enjoying seeing all these different sides to you.”
He slipped his hand under her chin and tipped her face up to look at him. “I’m just sorry I didn’t see that sooner.”
Her breath slipped between her barely open lips, and he leaned down to kiss her. Kendall’s voice called for them, making him step back.
“There you are,” she said. “Donaldson wants everyone gathered near the terrace. It’s almost midnight, and the fireworks are about to start.”
As Kendall ushered them down the hall, Sean noticed that the table seats across from there were devoid of David and Kristen’s dinner remains.
Erin grabbed her clutch and slung it over her shoulder.
“Stephens!” Donaldson said, pulling his attention away from the table.
