“I wanted to tell you that you look amazing tonight, Erin,” he said. “Not wearing the usual cardigan tonight, though. Always knew you had a nice figure.”
He recognized me? I thought the only person who would is Kendall.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, leaning against the bathroom doorjamb.
A waiter walked by them, heading to the pantry, sparing a glance at them.
She sighed, crossing her arms.
“He asked me to come with him. It’s pairs only, and he needed a pair. That’s all,” she replied.
She noticed Kendall out of the corner of her eye, standing at the end of the hall.
“So, you aren’t sleeping with him?” he asked, drawing her attention back to him.
She rolled her eyes as his gaze roved her body. She tightened her arms over her chest.
“I don’t sleep with my co-workers, much less my boss,” she replied, irritation rising.
“I can’t imagine Donaldson would be very happy with his junior associate bringing his secretary to the party with him,” David stated, straightening. He shoved his hands in his pockets, a smug look on his face.
Erin stiffened her spine, deciding she’d had enough of his attitude for the evening.
And for the rest of all time.
If she didn’t say something now, she would never do it.
Here goes nothing.
“Are you going to tell on us?” she asked, arching a brow. “That wouldn’t look very well on you, now would it? Snitching on another associate who is often covering your ass and taking care of work you don’t want to do.”
He frowned for a moment, replacing it with a smile. “You don’t have proof of that.”
“Don’t I? I have the Mitchell account on my desk right now that Donaldson specifically assigned to you. The one from the email last week? It’s sitting on my desk. You handed it off to Sean because you were trying, and failing, to close the Richford account. It’s really too bad that they decided to go with another firm.”
She clasped her hands behind her back. “Not to mention your previous assistant Kelly. She was relieved that she wouldn’t have to deal with you anymore when she left. We had a lovely conversation last week about some dinners you had with some clients thatweren’ton the record.”
“Everyone has off-the-record dinners,” he stated with a shrug.
“But does everyone have off-the-record dinners with clients’ wives? In their offices with the blinds closed?” she asked, tapping her chin with her finger. “I don’t think so. I know your wife doesn’t mind who you screw, but I can’t imagine she would be happy if she were to find out you were sleeping with a client’s wife. I know Donaldson wouldn’t. Should we go ask him?”
She stepped around him toward Kendall, but he stepped in front of her.
Kendall moved toward them, but Erin waved her off, the gesture unnoticed by the man in front of her.
“No, we shouldn’t,” he replied, his smile returning. “Sorry to have bothered you.” He turned to go back to the table.
“David,” Erin said, dragging his gaze back to her. “Leave Sean alone.”
He nodded and headed down the hall, passing Kendall as she made her way to Erin.
“Are you all right?” she asked, holding her clipboard to her chest.
“I am. He’s always been an ass, but he took it too far when he dragged Sean into it. So, I used what I know against him. Being an assistant is a wonderful thing sometimes.” Erin held up a hand, revealing the shaking extremity. “I can’t believe I did that, though. It’s so unlike me. I dislike confrontation.”
“Maybe something deep down inside you was tired of his crap,” Kendall quipped. “Not to mention all the other guys who think it’s okay to act like that.”
Erin laughed, holding her hand to her forehead. “Maybe? I’m glad Kelly left and doesn’t have to deal with him anymore.”
