Page 28 of Falling For My Assistant

Each centerpiece had stacks of streamers exploding from the middle in all different colors to look like fireworks in the middle of the table. Square black cards were placed in the middle with the words ‘Happy New Year 2022’ on them in silver lettering.

“I like the colors though,” Sean replied. “Definitely reminds me of fireworks.”

“Do you think they have a fireworks display planned for midnight?” Erin asked. “What time is it anyway?”

Sean looked down at his watch. “Nine forty-five.”

Already? It seems like we just got here.

“It feels like we just got here,” she said, reading his thoughts.

“It does. And,” he said, leaning back from the table when plates were placed in front of them, “Their fireworks shows are legendary.”

“What is this?” she asked, leaning over to him.

“They’re stuffed mushrooms,” he replied. “Aren’t you allergic to them?”

She nodded. “I’m surprised you remembered.”

“It’s kind of an important thing to remember,” he said, taking the plate and setting it on the other side of him.

“The mushrooms no good?” David asked, taking his seat across from Sean. Kristen sat next to him, her brow arching high at Erin.

“Erin is allergic to them,” Sean replied, taking a bite.

“So is Kristen,” David said, a smile coming to his face. “Looks like that’s something you have in common.”

Erin shifted in her chair, catching Sean’s eye.

“I’m sorry,” she said, with a smile in Kristen’s direction.

“It’s fine. I just make sure I never eat them. David also knows better than to order anything with them. Just looking at them makes me sick.” Kristen grabbed her small rose gold clutch, dragging a compact out. She dabbed her face a couple of times with powder and clicked it shut, shoving it back into her bag.

“So, Erin, what do you do for work?” she asked, plastering a smile on her face and waving off one of the waiters who brought a plate for her.

“Right now, I’m hoping to work for the Davidson Group. I had an interview with the firm last week, so I’m waiting to hear back from them,” Erin replied.

“That’s a great firm,” Sean said, taking a bite. Erin beamed.

Kristen’s nose scrunched up. “You mean that all-female firm? I heard they weren’t doing very well.”

Erin’s hands disappeared beneath the tabletop. “Actually, their client base jumped ten percent in the last month, and their earnings have exceeded their expectations.”

Sean set his silverware down and reached under the table, setting his hand on her knee. She took his hand in hers and squeezed.

“I wonder if they have hot assistants,” David quipped, earning a death glare from his wife. “What? Don’t act like you don't do it too.”

“I can assure you the attractiveness of their assistants doesn’t matter to me either way,” Erin replied, straightening her spine.

David had been through more assistants in the two years that Erin had worked for him, and he knew she’d heard some of the stories he had.

David’s last assistant quit because he refused to stop harassing her, even though he was disciplined multiple times for it. His current assistant was old enough to be his grandmother, so Sean was sure nothing was going on between them now.

What a pig.

Just the thought of David trying to treat Erin like that made his hackles rise.

“Your assistant is pretty hot,” David said, pinning Erin with a stare. “Under all those layers she wears, you know there’s an amazing body.”
