Story: Rescuing Barbi
“Ah, Charlie’s new team leader. Nice to meet you and thanks for getting me out of that hell.” I turn to Brady with the one question burning in my head. “How did you find us? They removed my trackers…”
“Mitzy Magic.” Brady leans back and laughs. “Something about crowdsourcing cellphones following their GPS locations? Using predictive software to determine where those cellphones traveled afterward? She did it when Izzy was taken.”
“Izzy?”
“She’s engaged to Booker.”
“Cartel members came after her. Mitzy used cellphone GPS signals to track them backward to find out where they came from.”
“Wow, I didn’t know you could do that.”
“It never ceases to amaze me what that woman can do.”
“Whatever it was, I couldn’t be more thankful, things were getting… Well, let’s just say they were getting intense.”
“What did he want from you?” Ethan leans forward, eyes focused and intent.
“Forest, of all things. He wanted to know what Guardian HRS had on him, but what he really wanted, or rather who, was Forest.”
“That’s weird.” Brady shakes his head. Like me, that last bit doesn’t make sense to him.
“Speaking of, where the fuck is Mitzy? I can’t believe I only just now realized she’s not here.” We’re a couple of hours into our seven-hour flight.
“At the hospital with the others. She ran this mission from Forest’s hospital room, if you can imagine that.”
“I can’t. I can’t imagine anything with Forest and hospital in the same sentence. How bad is it?”
“We’re all waiting to find out more.” Brady pulls at his chin. “You did good back there.” He pats me on the back.
“I’m just glad you found us when you did.” Images of Artemus yanking his pants down will stay with me for a very long time.
“He’s no longer a problem.” Brady rocks back in his chair.
“That’s true.” Is it wrong I enjoyed that kill? I truly feel his death was justified. What bothers me is that, for the first time in my life, I enjoyed it.
It’s going to take time to process what that means.
“What about Maximus Angelo? Job’s not done until they’re both put down for good.” Nicaragua’s Minister of the Interior is still out there. As bad as Artemus Gonzales was, he worked in partnership with Maximus Angelo.
“It’s done.” Ethan takes a sip from his coffee cup and sets it on the table.
“What does that mean?”
“Mitzy sent everything we had on Maximus to the President of Nicaragua, along with other interested parties. Let’s just say graft and corruption only go so far in a country where people like to keep that shit hidden. Maximus was taken care of.”
“By us?”
“The official word is he hanged himself. Unofficially, he pissed off a lot of people and was relieved of his life. Not by us, but others.”
“Nice way to put it.”
“Two devils down, more to go.” Ethan tugs at his ear. “Nice bit of job security we’ve got going here.”
“Unfortunately.” I lean back in my chair and blow out a breath. Ethan’s words ring with more truth than I’d like. Take one down and another rises in its place. “At least Artemus’s reign of terror is done. We can rest for a bit.”
“No rest for the wicked.” Brady drums on the top of the table. Then he summarizes how Cara provided vital intel on who the buyers were for Ethan’s benefit. “Our next mission is to rescue those women.”
“Now that is going to be a big job.” I sit with my brothers, going over the mission, and debriefing them on what happened to me. I still have no idea how Mitzy tracked us to the new location, but I’ll figure it out later.
