Story: Cory Sloan is Swearing
“Yes, you work in this store almost as much as I do,” Cory said.
“I do not.” Vi sighed. “I have the time right now. My accounts are all set. I don’t need to call on any customers. This is my payment for all the extra hours I’ve spent over the years going to bars and restaurants at night when I could’ve been home.”
“Does your boss know?”
“Yes, Diane suggested it.”
“Huh?”
Vi chuckled. “Diane suggested that I take a few afternoons off because once I get the promotion I’ll be busy again until I get settled in. How I choose to spend those afternoons is up to me.” She put her arms around Cory and kissed her. “I love being here with you.”
Cory smiled and gazed into Vi’s eyes. She could see the delight. “I love you being here with me.”
“I’ll be right back,” Vi said with a wink.
Cory watched her walk to the back of the store and shook her head. “I’m the luckiest person in the fucking world.” She went over to replenish the items on the counter by the register when the bell over the door jingled.
A couple walked into the store and Cory turned around to help them.
“Oh, my God,” Cory gasped. “You must be Violet’s mother.”
“I am,” Josie said proudly.
“I can see where Violet gets her beauty,” Cory gushed. Realizing what she said, she widened her eyes. “Oh shit…I mean,” Cory stammered. “I didn’t mean any disrespect.”
Vi’s father gave her a wry smile. “Her beauty makes me act like a fool as well. I’m Violet’s father, Alberto,” he said, holding out his hand. “I guess you’re Cory?”
Cory took it and gave him a relieved smile.
“She told us you were funny and quite beautiful,” Josie said with a grin.
“Uh, did she say I’m an idiot as well?” Cory took a deep breath. “I’m so sorry. Welcome, it’s so nice to meet you both. Let me get Violet for you.”
“Hey babe,” Vi said, coming in from the back. “I found a case of—Mama´! Papa´!” Vi hurried and hugged her parents. When she turned to introduce them to Cory, her father held up his hand.
“We’ve met Cory,” Alberto said.
Cory looked down at her feet and back at Vi. She shrugged. “I’ve already embarrassed you.”
Vi chuckled and put her arm around Cory. “I’m sure you haven’t.”
“I think adorable is the word Vi used,” Josie said with a grin.
Vi smiled at Cory. “I did and I love her,” she added.
“Thank God.” Cory looked at Vi lovingly.
“Hold on, I don’t remember anything about love,” Alberto protested.
“Oh, Daddy, stop!” Vi said. “You can’t scare her away.”
“Oh, I don’t think anything can keep her from you. I’ve seen how she looks at you,” Josie said.
“Just like you and Dad look at each other.”
Vi’s parents shared a look and smiled at their daughter.
“I thought you’d be here later tonight,” Vi said.
