Story: Cory Sloan is Swearing
Cory’s face softened. “Okay.” She sighed. “Well, have a nice evening.”
Vi gave her a half smile.
Cory could see something happening behind her eyes, but couldn’t read her expression. At first she thought Vi was angry, but then it seemed she was torn and somewhat confused.
Cory gave her a kind smile then watched Vi walk out of Your Way.
For a moment Cory stood there not understanding what just happened. Vi had seemed friendly enough Saturday night, but today she was doing everything she could to avoid Cory. She sighed again then walked back into the gym.
CeCe was talking with Desi, one of the owners of Your Way, so Cory joined them.
“Hi, Cory,” Desi said. “I was just telling your sister how glad I was to see her at a party I went to last week. I’m always a little uncomfortable at those things.”
“Do you mean the party with her new doctor girlfriend?” Cory grinned at CeCe. “You don’t like parties?”
“I want to go to be with my wife, but sometimes I feel so out of place. Erin’s the head of the hospital and I’m a gym owner.” Desi shrugged.
“Since my sister is dating a doctor I’m sure you’ll see her at more of those parties,” Cory said. “But hey, who wouldn’t want you and CeCe at a party? You’re good people.”
“Not all of us have your confidence and swagger wherever you happen to be, my dear sister,” CeCe said with a smirk.
“That’s right,” Desi agreed.
“I don’t know about that.” Cory frowned. “Hey, Des. I just ran into Vi Valdez. She was practicing volleyball. Does she work out here?”
“Oh, yeah. She’s been a member for a while now,” Desi replied.
Cory tilted her head. “I’m surprised I haven’t run into her before.”
“Let’s see,” Desi said. She raised one hand and started raising each finger. “That would be because you’ve been busy, first setting up a new building, then opening a business. That’s why you haven’t been here to work out. If you’d been here, I’m sure you’d have seen her. She’s a regular.”
Cory nodded.
“You know, y’all should have a lot in common. She’s a salesperson for Spec’s,” Desi said.
“Yeah, you’d think we would, but we’re kind of competitors,” Cory said with a shrug.
“She doesn’t work at a store and she’s hoping to be promoted to head of sales soon.”
“Really?” Cory asked.
“Yeah, she was telling me just the other day that she hoped to get the job because she’d have more free time in the evenings to attend some of our other classes. I guess she works late a lot,” Desi explained.
Cory furrowed her brow. “Hmm, I guess I’ll be seeing her since our volleyball league is starting up again.”
“She’s pretty good from what I’ve heard,” Desi said.
“So is my sister.” CeCe grinned at Cory.
Cory grabbed the ball and ran onto the court. Desi and CeCe watched her, then turned to each other.
“I think there may be something going on there,” CeCe said.
“Oh?”
“Yep, my sister was certainly watching Vi and she was watching Cory as well.”
Desi smiled. “Hmm, love and fitness. Maybe that should be our new tagline.”
