Page 90 of Uprising
We start shooting back, taking position while mentally I curse because thiswillget attention. Half the city will hear the noise and I don’t doubt Darius will have the militia out.
Two of our men move out, securing more ground, providing enough cover for someone else to drag Carla out towards the vans.
But as they get close more bullets hail down on us from a completely different position.
Carla screams. The man holding her yanks her back and she takes the moment to knee him in the balls.
And then suddenly she’s running, barefoot, across the gravel, screaming, hollering, her hair is awry, her robe is flapping in the wind.
I snarl springing from where I am but whoever is out there starts shooting once more and I’m so close to getting my head blown off.
“Get that fucking bitch.” I shout before taking aim, shooting right at where I know the arsehole is hiding.
We hear the groan as my bullet finds him. Without hesitation I’m running again, chasing after Carla even though I know it’s too late. The bitch is gone. She’s slipped through my fingers.
And then we hear the sound we’ve been dreading. The sound we’ve all been listening out for.
The militia are on their way. It’s over. This whole thing is over.
I give the order, ensuring every one of our men are back in the vans and then we’re speeding down the streets, driving like mad men.
We have to get away, we have to get to the tunnels before they realise it’s us. Before we fuck everything up.
Rose
Someone is knocking on our door. Tapping urgently. I sit up in the darkness. In fairness it’s hard to sleep, hard to close my eyes when all I can see, all I can hear is Sofia and what they’ve done to her, what they keep doing to her.
Darius groans before he shoves the duvet off and walks to the door.
“What?” He snaps.
“There’s been another incident.”
It’s Carter. Even with Darius stood here I can feel his eyes searching me out and I pull the sheets up, hiding myself from his gaze.
So Roman has been busy then.
For some reason it doesn’t give me relief. Not now, not in the darkness. In moments like this it makes me fear more, makes me panic.
“What incident?” Darius growls.
“Carla is missing.”
I gasp before I can stop myself and Darius gives me a look that says ‘shut the fuck up’.
And then he’s walking out, slamming the door, making it clear that though it’s my mother I’m not allowed to know the details.
But I can’t just sit here.
I wait long enough to make sure it’s safe and then I’m creeping out, tiptoeing through the darkness. They’re not even in his office, they’re just stood, in the hall, one level below where I am and their voices carry up.
“You think it’s him?” Darius murmurs.
“It’s not just the Capulet House, they’ve attacked a dozen others. All high profile, all big names, all linked to you know what.”
Darius curses.
“They strung Collin King’s body up over the East Bridge.”
